Angry Job Seeker Writes an OPEN Letter To HR Officers: Answer Him PLEASE!

When one decides to make a job application it’s because they have gone through the job description and made sure they have what it takes for the job.

The question though, why do so many jobs seekers keep missing these positions?

Peter Karanja, a job seeker in this dilemma wrote an open letter to all HR Professionals in Kenya regarding the same through IHRM LinkedIn group.

“My name is Peter Karanja. I am  29 years old with a Bachelor Degree in Business Administration, Higher Diploma in HR and ICDL certificate in Computer Operations. I have 5 years work experience though not satisfied with my current job. This has led me to vigorously search for a better job for the last 5 years without success. I have been looking forward to that one day when I will be able to get a job that will inspire and aspire me achieve my dreams.

The sad thing for me is that each time I attend an interview, I am given the impression that I’m the best but at the hiring stage I am over looked for someone else. It’s these events that have led me to confront practicing Human Resource Professionals to kindly share with me the criteria they use to select the successful applicant for the job.

In one instance I was asked to fill in the employment forms and told to provide all the relevant documents including my bank details only to be told that the process has been suspended. I was later told when I was making follow ups that someone else has been hired at my expense with a better salary.

He goes ahead to ask, “What do you consider when selecting the final candidate since in almost all the jobs I have applied I met the minimum qualifications required for the particular job?”

“And why do they sometimes give excuses for ceased recruitment while they had advertised for an open post,” he continues to ask

He concludes by saying that , “I’m  giving myself a period of one year if I will not be successful in my current job search , then I better quit employment for business since it seems as if I am cursed.”

See what they had to say.
Betty Saleri, a Human Resource Officer at Pwani University advises that, “Find out what your referees are writing about you. Some referees especially bad employers when approached for reference by another employer, write bad comments about an applicant. If this is the case, change your referees.”

Terry Shiundu, a HR and Administration Officer at LVCT says that, “Different positions are filled for various reasons, just because you didn’t get it doesn’t mean that you’re not good, probably, the reason you didn’t get those ones might be because you’re too good for them.”

On why recruitment are sometimes stopped, Brenda Mukunzi a HR Practitioner offers various reasons.

She says that, “Recruitment can be stopped for various reasons, such as an NGO that loses critical funding might not continue with the process.”

“Also an organization might go through restructuring which renders certain jobs or functions redundant and thus a recruitment exercise can be withdrawn,” she continues to say.

As a job seeker, do you feel satisfied with these responses?
