Thought Provoking! What Will You Have Achieved at 90 Yrs Like Moi?

By Elizabeth Benu,
For many we dream of having a life full of achievements. Even with our jobs and domestic concerns we still live our dreams in our mind and it’s the possibility of our dreams coming true that makes life interesting.

Retired president Daniel Moi celebrated his 90th birthday on Tuesday with his bucketful of achievements. Besides being a teacher he was president for 24 years and saw the erection of many education and health institutions and infrastructure just to mention but a few of his achievements.

Now he ages gracefully in his Kabarack home and I am sure he smiles at the achievements he made.

In respect to this, I sought the opinions of Kenyan on what they want to achieve by the time they clock 90.

Maureen Achieng’ a 23year old graduate wishes to have a lot of money to her name.

“I want to have a steady business making good money. I also want to have a comfortable retirement home in the suburbs where I will retire to bliss with my children and grandchildren. At that age I do not want to worry about my career,” Ms. Achieng is quick to add.

Joel Kariuki shares his opinion as that of having a big house, a shamba for farming and grown up employed kids.

“In terms of my career I want to upgrade my academics. As at now I only have a diploma and the degrees and masters are on their way. I still want to have a business running and if possible…who knows I might even retire at 90,” he adds.

Amanda Bruce a student at Daystar University wonders whether she will be alive at that age but she does not want anything to do with her career.

“I will have achieved a lot in my career since my retirement plan is between 45-50 years. I want to enjoy my last days on earth with my day involving waking up and sleeping. I want to be away from the city in my retirement home just been surrounded by the people I love,” she adds.

Samantha Ndiku wants to have her own company even though she won’t be the one running it.

“I just want to stay at home, have my own farm and create employment. I also want to have travelled wide with my dear very rich husband. In terms of my career I hope to have changed a life,” says Ms. Ndiku

Mark Maputo is not sure of what he wants.

“90 is too far to start planning for. My only wish would be to age gracefully and be in a leadership position. I also want to have swerve at 90 and wear crisp designer suits. By the time I am in a leadership role I believe I will have succeeded in my career,” Mr. Maputo explains.

What achievements would you hope to achieve by the time you are 90?
