Chipukeezy: “When I First Heard About Churchill, I Had No Television”

Meet twenty four-year-old Vincent Mutua who grew up in Tala, Machakos County knowing nothing about comedy.

Today, many know him as Chipukeezy and if you have watched him on Churchill Show or listened to him on Kiss 100 Breakfast show you will agree with me that he has a talent.

Surprisingly, growing up he never imagined he would have a career as a comedian until he came to Nairobi and realized that there was a big future in comedy as a career.

In a previous interview with Standard, he says that, “When I first heard about Churchill and his career, I had no television, so I Googled him up to check out his videos and understand the whole comic concept. That was when I had my light bulb moment.”

So how did he finally get into the comedy industry?
“When the first season of Churchill Live came to a close, I was sure I wanted to be part of the next season but I was not well equipped to join the comedy big shots,” he told Standard Digital

He was not always as good as he is today, so to get ready for the big stage he started on smaller grounds such as hosting live comedy shows with Fred Omondi such show include Crazy Comedy Show which saw him get noticed by Churchill.

What does it take to make people laugh?
Many of us think that making people laugh is as easy as ABC, but Chipukeezy says that it’s not such an easy job.

“I have realized that comedy is no joke. You will hardly ever find me laughing even as I think up my jokes; because I know how much work it takes to stir up an audience,” he says

What makes his jokes unique?
While preparing for the big stage, Chipukeezy took time to study the industry. All other comedians seemed to do tribal jokes which he thought came out as a bit offensive. That’s how he settled on his unique style of personal jokes that many people would easily identify with.

What inspires him?
He says that his biggest inspiration comes from his family, “My family is quite dear to me and they were the inspiration behind my stage characters such as Kimondio who most of my fans love, and often want to meet.”

How did he get a job at Kiss100?
Chipukeezy’s full time job is comedy, which saw him land a job as Caroline Mutoko’s co-host at Kiss 100’s morning breakfast show.

“I cracked a joke about Sonko’s daughter, telling her that I was broke but if I married her, we would simply spend her father’s wealth. That must have been my award winning moment because a week later, I was at the Kiss 100 studios learning the radio basics,” reveals Chipukeezy
