Is Your Degree Recognized? CUE Pushes For New Move

How would you feel if after four years of study, you are looking for a job and the government does not recognize the institution you went to?

In the past, Professional bodies have disowned degrees from some Kenyan universities making it difficult for graduates to secure employment.

In a story on The Business Daily, the Commission of University Education (CUE) wants to lock out professional bodies like Engineers Board of Kenya (EBR), Architectural Association of Kenya (AAK), Pharmacy and Poisons Board and the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) from determining universities that fit to offer degrees.

The commission wants parliament to amend the laws to ensure that it is the only body to accredit graduates to avoid situations where professional bodies reject those from newly established universities.

According to the paper, earlier on in August 26 EBR released a list of universities it acknowledges as training schools for engineers that excludes Kenyatta University, Masinde Muliro University and Technical University of Kenya.

It is reported that this move will see engineering graduates miss out on professional accreditation narrowing their chances of getting jobs.

“We are now looking at a situation where students are left in the dark or mistakes that are not of their making. You must stamp your authority and ensure that the charters are recognized,” Kirinyaga Senator Daniel Karaba is quoted.

The senate standing committee expressed fears that students are unaware that the degrees they are pursuing in a number of universities will not be recognized by their professional bodies.
