3 Questions In ANY Internship Interview & How To Handle Them
By Elizabeth Benu,
“I have been invited to an interview for an intern position. I am confident about my abilities and strengths but I do not have an idea of what questions I should expect. I tend to think that an internship interview is different from a normal job interview in terms of experience and skills. What kind of questions can I expect,” writes a concerned graduate in an email
Scooping an internship when you are a fresh graduate is very exciting. Even with confidence it is impossible to imagine the questions a hiring manager is likely to ask you.
Let’s have a look on the questions and tips HR Professionals give
1. Why you are interested to get an internship
When faced with this question one should consider what they want to know, the experience they want to gain or whether it is just a requirement from the learning institutions. These will help you answer the question right,” says Ms. Yvonne Abade, HR Officer Lutheran World Federation Dadaab
She also adds that this is a question that gives you an opening to sell yourself so that when future openings come up you can get an opportunity.
2. Questions about your Personal Information
Ms Abade states that one may be asked to give their qualifications in full details and any other interests or personal information that is outlined in your CV.
“Consider the position you have applied for and use your academic background from Form Four level to the degree/ diploma level. You can also state what you are majoring in and how it will help you in taking on the responsibilities you will be given. You can also talk about yourself and your interests as a person,” Ms. Abade adds
3. What are your Future plans?
Ms Abade says that in this question the hiring manager wishes to know about your career and your future plans for it
Vincent Macharia a HR Officer at Copy Cat Limited says, “If your passion is in the career world you can use experience. For those in the business, saving early can be in your goals. This narrows down to what you have passion in. Put all the things in place and then plan for them. A good thing is to have a road map; process to follow to achieve a goal and this shows that you are very focused.”
What advice does Ms. Abade have for fresh graduates in terms of an internship interview?
“Be open, focused and very clear on what you want. Go to that interview with an open mind. It is also advisable to get a cover. Most companies have insured their property and they would love if you were covered too,” she counsels.
She also adds that, “Have everything well planned and organized. Since interviews are competitive, hiring managers choose the ones that can easily be accommodated in their organizations.”
To be the best fit, prepare well for that internship opportunity.
