“Monday is For Job Searching & Not Attending Rallies,” Message to Migori Youths
By Tabitha Makumi,
Unemployment is said to be the root of many evils in the society and speaking to several Kenyans on the Migori Chaos at the president’s rally which have been trending for the better part of the week, they seem to think that were it not for unemployment, such an incidence would not have taken place.
“I believe if these youths had jobs, they would not have been at the rally heckling the President and all those so called leaders who are said to have bribed them to act the way they did,” says Jonathan Omondi a Sales Manager with a cosmetics company in Nairobi
He adds that that’s why politicians find it easy to throw a few coins every now and then on the youth’s faces and tell them to do anything which they (youth) always oblige to.
“They all looked like young people who could have been doing something better with their lives,” agrees Stella Muthoni an Accounts Assistant with a Pharmaceutical firm.
She adds that although unemployment is to blame for the chaos, lack of discipline also played a part.
“There are better ways to have addressed their grievances. Even in the corporate world, you can’t start heckling the boss whenever you don’t agree with him or her no matter how right you are,” she insists.
For Mathew Otieno a Business Development Manager in Nakuru he says during a phone interview that he cannot understand for the life of him what all those youths were doing on a rally on such a day as Monday.
“Everyone is busy on Monday. Going to work, looking for employment, going on with your own hustle and even though we would like to pin unemployment on this one, I believe what those Kenyans showed us was pure hooliganism,” he asserts, adding that this are the same people who will complain that no employer wants to hire them.
“Would you hire yourself if you were in the employers’ shoes?” he poses
For Nahashon Kiarie, an entrepreneur for an IT startup company, he feels that there’s more than what was seen at the rally.
“I believe these people had real issues which have been dismissed time and time again and when they saw an opportunity to air them, they went with it,” he adds that speaking up should never be seen as lack of discipline.
Would he then hire a person who is not afraid to raise his voice at him?
He pauses at this and thinks. “I like hiring people who can speak up for themselves if they are any injustices going on. You know, someone who is not afraid to come to you and
He however adds that how you go about it (speaking up) matters a great deal.
Well, you saw what happened in Migori, would you blame unemployment on this one too?
