Getting The Pay Rise You Deserve- Nakumatt Employees Get 12% Raise
By Jane Okoth,
Many people are not fully satisfied with their salaries but what they don’t know is that they can get the pay rise they deserve with enough backing up.
Imagine a scenario where you seem to be straining yourself on your finances with the cost of living going up significantly.
It is never easy facing your boss and asking for more money because you cannot predict his reaction.
According to the business daily, Nakumatt supermarkets employees will earn a 12% salary increment.
The workers are also set to earn higher housing, transport and night-shift allowances and additional leave days as per the two-year collective bargaining agreement signed with the Kenya Union of Commercial, Food and Allied Workers.
Kenya’s top retailers have been hit with a rising spate of industrial action, as workers push for better salaries and working conditions.
Uchumi was in trouble last year when about 3,500 workers threatened to boycott work if management failed to award them with a 10% salary increment.

Tuskys Supermarkets’ 7,000 employees went on strike in December last year demanding a 10 per cent pay rise and allowances.
Apart from opting for an industrial action, how do you convince your boss to award you with a salary increment?
Knowing how and when to approach your boss will be the greatest boost to your demands.
HR Managers advice that it’s good to find the perfect time- approach your boss on a day when he seems to be in a good mood or has even complimented you on your good work.
It’s also good to do research- find out what other employers are paid for similar roles both within and without and this will guide you to demand a reasonable increment. This will save you from the embarrassment of demanding ridiculous amounts that you do not deserve.
HR Managers caution employees on being confrontational as some think it is a good idea to threaten the boss with a resignation letter or get too personal.
Have you asked for a pay rise and what methods did you use?
