“My First Job was At Bamburi Cement,” 38 Yr Old Opens Up About Her Career Journey

How long did you stay at your first job? 6 months, 2 years? For most people, the first job is just a stepping stone, a place to gain experience and move on to a better job. But that was not the case for 38 year old Scientist Miriam Ngolo.

“My first job was at Bamburi Cement Ltd and I have been there for 13 years. I have risen through the ranks and undergone a lot management training,” she recently was interviewed by True Love Magazine.

Today she is the plant manager at the company. And if you are wondering what her job is all about she says, “As a plant manager, my first concern is the health and safety of all employees, contractors and customers. I challenge line managers on any deviations noted. I also carry out reviews to see whether there were any issues in dispatch and security operations”

She also adds that she is responsible for scheduling plant tours and engages with people.

“My role includes engaging with stakeholders such as community leaders and politicians,” and just like any other job out there, she adds that,

“Some days are busier than others due to performance review and forecasting with the management team.”

She agrees that managing people and driving for results is one of the difficult things to do. “This job gives me the opportunity for person growth,” she tells the magazine adding that, “I have become more self aware and have outstretched myself outside my comfort zone.

She confesses that she loves working in a man’s world. “Bamburi supports the development of female professionals. All my coaches and most of my peers are men and they have supported me all the way.”

What would she doing is she wasn’t working in the cement industry?

“My natural choice would be the cosmetics industry,” she tells the magazine.

She cites her greatest achievements as rising up the ranks to become a plant manager. “And having our Mombasa laboratory where I was Chief Chemist rated the best laboratory amongst the Larfarge Africa Plants and among the best worldwide,” she tells Judith Mwobobia.

The mother of one who enjoys singing, gardening and interior decorating shares some advice which you do you well “Chose a career that you love. You are on a continuous journey whatever career you embark on.”
