Upcoming Training: 1.2M Kenyans To Gain Training On Successful Online Job Search
By Jane Okoth,
The internet is now becoming an essential tool in the job search industry. Potential job seekers have turned to the internet because it is effective in accessing job notices around the clock, locating career information and also research their dream companies, organizations and agencies.
Gone were the days when individuals used to wait for job openings on newspapers or from a friend and even walk in search of kuna kazi posters in town.
It seems Kenyans and particularly women will benefit more from the internet use and its use in finding jobs.
In a recent article run by Business Daily, an American company Intel Corporation is planning to train 1.2 million Kenyan women on how to use computers and the Internet to search for jobs.
The Programme is targeting to train 2,000 women by end of the year and 1.2 million more by end of the first phase in 2016 with the training costing Sh3,500 per participant.
Danie Steyn, the general manager of Intel Corporation East Africa has said that “The training will equip the women with 21st Century skills to help them stay globally competitive and enable them to access borderless jobs available online.”
The use of the internet has made the lives of many Kenyans easy by reducing the cost of acquiring information about jobs as well as impacting how workers learn about jobs and their immediate response.
How has the internet impacted your life as far as job searching is concerned?
“My current job is thanks to using the internet to search it,” says Joan Oyugi an IT personnel at a communication firm in Nairobi.
He adds that, “I had subscribed to various job sites and once I got the update, I applied and was successful. The good thing with the internet is that it is available 7 days a week 24 hours a day and also the use of information and resources on the internet is free,” she explains.
“There are no boundaries when you search for jobs using the internet. You can even apply for a job opening in America from Kenya as long as you match the qualifications.
Using the internet for my job hunting has puts me at a higher level than common jobseekers because I normally get job alerts from my phone compared to one who is used to walking from office to office. Victor Mwangi, a Kenyan jobseeker, points out.
Gloria Kariuki, an online writer says that the internet has allowed her to network with well known professionals. “I was keenly following a career and motivation talk one day at capital fm Ask Kirubi segment. I was surprised that some of career related questions and advice were fully answered by Chris Kirubi himself.” She says.
“The internet has a big impact on young people and the government should do more by reducing taxes on mobile handsets so as all Kenyans particularly in mashinani can access it too.” she suggests.
Has your job search become easier now that the internet is involved? Have you been successful or not?
