How I Got A Job With Family Bank, My Salary & The Working Environment.
By Elizabeth Benu
Family Bank is one of the top banks in Kenya which is well capitalized, profitable and financially stable. It is a successful bank that would offer a great opportunity to those interested in the Banking Industry.
Career Point Kenya recently spoke to a current employee in the position of Operations Officer. She talks of how she got the job there and the working environment at the esteemed bank
How did you apply for the job?
I applied by sending a well crafted CV. I was fresh out of campus so I wrote all the skills I had gained. My cover letter was just the normal one “I am interested in working with your organization..I have experience in…”
How was the interview?
It was tough; being my first official interview.
What questions were you asked?
They asked me general questions such as: ‘Tell us about yourself’, ‘what are your strengths and weaknesses?’ and ‘what is your greatest achievement so far?’. They also asked me questions about the bank to test if I had done my research.
How did you start the job?
After being confirmed for the position, I had to go through an intensive two week training. This training is meant to equip you on the skills you need for the job.
How would you describe the bank?
Family bank is a bank that offers fair employment opportunities to everyone. Regardless of your tribe or religion, if you are qualified you will get employed there. They are more interested in the skills not your religious or tribal background
Would you say it is a bank with an assured successful career path?
Yes I would. Even as an Operations Officer, one has to start as a teller. The bank also has a 6-month probation period and I believe that sets a pace to molding you into a productive employee.
What challenges have you faced while working there?
The major challenge is being accurate when counting money considering there are so many transactions made in a day. As a bank employee you have to pay for any money lost. In my second month I could not find an amount of Kshs. 10, 000 and I had to pay. It was the most frustrating moment in my job.
It is also a challenging position with a lot of pressure and a strict official dressing code.
What is the salary range for this (Operations Officer) position?
It is between Kshs 35,000 – 50, 000
Any advice for the Bank’s senior management?
I haven’t worked long enough to give sound advice to the management
Would you recommend someone to work at Family Bank?
Yes I would. It is a great place to grow in terms of career and it also offers a great working environment where coworkers willingly help out no matter your position.
Describe your day as an Operating Officer
My day at the bank begins at 7:00am in the morning and ends at 7:00 pm. It starts and ends with a staff meeting. In between one has to serve clients who come in to make transactions.
