Working in the banking industry is an available opportunity for every Kenyan graduate venturing in the job market.
The Industry is a perfect starting point because of the many privileges available to its employees.
Very soon Kenya will be among the countries in Africa that will hire a significant number of staff to work in the prestigious Standard Charted bank.
According to an article on The Standard, the bank plans to hire at least 1000 more staff in Africa in the next couple of years.
Kenya was picked alongside Nigeria and Ghana as the three most attractive markets.
Standard chartered which is one of the biggest international banks in Africa, has about 8,100 staff in Africa and has a significant presence in 15 countries.
What is your take on seeking employment in the industry?
“So many graduates start their careers in the banking industry because the job opportunity is readily available,” says Dorothy Akinyi, a former employee at a local bank in the CBD.
“It is a good place to start your career but many get easily discouraged because of the work load and also the poor pay.I can say working in the bank has become overrated. People fancy it but it has its own disappointments,” she opines.
“I work with a known bank in the sales and advertising department,” says Lillian Malinda who adds that, “I cannot complain much because I have enjoyed a lot of privileges since working there. As a new graduate, I get to receive trainings that are up to the standards,” she says.
“The most important advantage of working in a banking industry is that it somehow boosts your CV,” says Isabel Mutave, a former bank employee.
“The fact that I had previously worked for a bank singles me out as a highly desirable achiever.”
“What I remember about my former job as a graduate trainee was the job security,” says Vincent Matara, a former employee at KCB bank.
“People who enjoy most privileges and are better off are those who work in the managerial positions compared to other fresh graduates,” he cites.
“I cannot also fail to mention the work load issue. Attending to thousands of people daily requires determination. I can remember sometimes we used to leave the office at past 8pm!” he exclaims.
