Unilever & G4S Among Top Best Companies To Work For in Kenya…Do You Agree?

By Jane Okoth

It is the ultimate dream of every employee to work for a company that will give them satisfaction in terms of pay, working conditions and allowances.

Is there such a thing as the best company to work for in the country?

This is because several companies have been named the best to work for in the country for having outstanding employee working conditions.

The 7 organizations namely

  • Becton Dickinson East Africa Ltd,
  • DHL Worldwide Express Kenya Ltd,
  • Earnest and Young Kenya,
  • G4S,
  • Microsoft,
  • Old Mutual Kenya,
  • SAP Africa and
  • Unilever Kenya

were awarded by Research firm Top Employers Institute.

The companies which were selected in an annual international research undertaken by the Institute headquartered in the Netherlands and with offices globally were awarded the Top Employers Kenya 2015 Certification.

Are Kenyans agreeing with this research?

“I have always seen people speak highly of Earnest and Young . Though I have never had the privilege of working there, I believe it’s a nice company to work with” says Erick Mutuma, a hotelier at a prestigious hotel in the CBD.

“There is no such thing as the best company to work for so I beg to disagree with the research,” says Millie Mutua, a teacher at a private school.

“I know of some companies that are better off in terms of pay and working conditions but are not in the list. I do not know which criteria was used in the selection and determining which companies are the best,” she says.

“Every company has its own challenges,” says Miriam Abdul.

“There is no safe haven in any employment. In one aspect the pay might be good but the demands and work load are too much to bear. People need to understand that.

Collins Ndege, a former auditor at Price Waterhouse Coopers agrees.

“I used to work even Saturday and Sundays. Every evening I would go home with loads of assignments and duties to undertake. I do recall some of my colleagues even quit work,” he says.

“I did not even have a social life so I agree every company has its own challenges. Apart from that, the pay was really good and encouraging,” he concludes.

Are you comfortable with the current working conditions of your job and do you agree with the research?
