Is It Terribly Wrong For Employees To Be Motivated By Money?
By Elizabeth Benu
In today’s world, a high percentage of young job seekers are not looking for job security; to them it’s all about how much a position can fetch rather than what opportunity it will offer.
Do you think it’s wrong to be money-motivated when looking for a job?
Some will choose to differ while others will take the option of agreeing with the statement
Maureen Akinyi, a Sales Executive at Branding Company in Eldoret, opines that with the current poor economy, money tops the list of interests for job seekers.
“A job seeker is looking for a job because they need to pay bills not because it has a pension scheme. I studied IT but ended up taking a Sales job. I had so many financial responsibilities so I was motivated by the pay and not the security. Besides, job security is not guaranteed nowadays,” adds Ms. Akinyi
John Nyamari, a teacher with 12 years experience is under the impression that new job seekers should not be judged for preferring money over job security.
“I don’t think it’s morally wrong to be money-motivated. The young job seekers just out of college are the kind not willing to stay in one job for too long; they are still experimenting. An older job seeker will be interested in medical cover, bonuses, pensions and loans because they understand the need for these things,” he explains.
He cements his point by adding that this happens because new job seekers have little exposure to the corporate world.
“Money is the driving factor when it comes to job searching. Besides if I am planning to start my own business I would not want to get stuck in one job all in the name of job security,” says Moses Kinyanjui a final year student pursuing a degree in IT
Joyce Nambisia an Office Assistant in a government institution is against having money as a motivation factor while job searching.
“At the end of the end of the day we are all looking to live comfortably. This means being well compensated by your employer but let’s not make it all about money.”
In the end job seekers should be motivated by the need to be better in what they do and not just peg their motivation on the money factor, Ms Nambisia concludes.
What motivates you? The money or the job security?
