4 Classic Excuses of The ‘Fake Job Seeker’

Source: LinkedIn

Have you been using excuses to explain why you are not job searching? Are you serious about working your way towards your dream job?

There are some however, that want to find a new job but let the following excuses derail the process.

Does any of this sound familiar?

1. I haven’t got time to network

You have got the time to network you simply don’t want to. You should be networking as part of your daily commitment to your career.

Networking not only showcases your abilities to the influential people that matter, it also keeps you in the heads of the people that matter. In turn this provides access to the hidden job market and the best available jobs in your field. Without networking you can say goodbye to the best jobs.

Network at events and on LinkedIn.

2. Not following up enquiries and interviews

The fact is that if you’re not following up your actions you are greatly missing out on opportunities. Networking events, inviting to connect on LinkedIn, application forms submitted, and attending an interview should be followed up in some capacity.

This shows that you’re interested, you really want to connect or want the job etc, and it keeps you in their heads. If you and five people interview for the same job and you’re the only one who is following up, what does this show a possible future employer? It shows them you care and subsequently are the pick of the bunch.

Ensure you follow up after a week of the event, or in the case of interviews, a week after the interviewer said they would be in touch with you.

3. Too stressed, too busy etc

If you are feeling overwhelmed the best option is to take a break for a day or so and then get back in the saddle. The more you put into your job search the sooner you will see fruitful results.

Job searching requires grind. It means you spend at least a few hours a week searching, applying, and discovering new jobs. You spend time networking and forming connections. You get yourself out there.

4. You’re searching for your dream job

The mythical ‘dream’ job which in all probability only exists in your mind will not fall into your lap. You find the best roles after you pay your dues and take well chosen roles which lead to bigger and better opportunities.

Yes that role is not going to be hassle free but so what? Get a better job not your dream one, and once you have a better job roll your sleeves up and work.

The fact is if you are using excuses not to make a leap then you probably are not ready to leave your current role.
