Meet 23Yr Old Graduate Who Wowed Kenyans By Producing Sauti Sol’s ‘Nishike’ Video
What was your first reaction to the Sauti Sol’s ‘Nishike’ video? Whether it left you disturbed, thrilled or angry it got 150, 000 views on YouTube within 2 days of release. Who dared produce such content?
Meet 23 year old Kagwe Mungai the producer of this controversial video that stirred reactions across the internet. The producer who also adds up as a saxophonist, songwriter, drummer, singer, poet, DJ and rapper illustrates how it was producing the video.
“It was a lot of fun, there was immediate musical chemistry which is a plus. It’s not a necessity when working with artists but is definitely a bonus,” he tells UP Magazine
Music is not one of the careers that many people pursue or even study for. But what motivated Mr. Mungai to pursue a Music degree at the University of Southampton in England?
“When I was choosing my degree, passion was always the main motivational factor. If you do something passionately and diligently the result will always be positive. University was a fantastic experience. I was blessed enough to go to a great university and meet some of the most amazing people from around the world,” he is quoted by Nairobi Wire.
And did his parents approve of his career choice?
He says that, “Yes. I feel so blessed to have such an amazing support system. Some of my strongest assets are my family and friends. At all my shows they have always been front row center. They are my biggest fans and have been there every step of the way.”
Surprisingly the 1991 born gentleman started pursuing his music career at the age of 13.
“I started producing first. But later I realized to excel and stand out I needed to understand music. The first track I produced was when I was 13; it was called ‘Same as before’ and I think that there’s only one person in the whole world that has it today,” he recalls
And why are people not familiar with even after working with renowned artists such as Eric Wainaina, Sauti Sol, Victoria Kimani and Muthoni the Drummer Queen?
“What I do is very personal and seeing as many people do not know me, they also don’t know my music. My plan is to be more passionate and hope that my hunger will attract a passion for what I do. Between university, part time jobs and actually making the music, my “offline”promotion suffered,” he explains
You would think that his career has been a rosy affair but in a recent interview at the Homeboyz Radio he recounts his lowest point in his career.
“I went on stage and performed without realizing there was a TV behind me. I introduced myself the crowd got excited. While performing I thought to myself “these people are feeling it.” In the middle of the song people got excited again and I looked back and realized that there was a Manchester United game on. I sat down thinking that this will never work,” he says.
Having worked on successful music videos, does he have any future ambitions for himself?
“I see myself a lot more developed. I intend to push myself beyond my borders and push those borders even further,” he remarks.
