Ladies, Do You Have To Wear High Heels To Signify “Success”?
By Jane Okoth,
Ladies, do high heels empower you in the workplace or is it just an ignorant perception meant to mislead women?
Some claim that it can boost your career by transforming you into a confident force to be reckoned with while others argue that it can hamper your career by putting too much emphasis on your physical appearance rather than your brains.
Talking about bosses who make it a requirement to wear heels and you keep asking yourself, “What were they thinking?”
How do you rate your success whether in heels or flat shoes?
“What I know about wearing a heel is that it can have permanent damage on your feet and ankles, including, ankle fractures and nerves,” says Christabel Mumbua, a Secretary at a Local Law Firm.
“Tell me again why I have to be wearing those horrible heels because there is no way you can look “nice” at work and also avoid the agony,” she says.
“Also when women wear high heels at work, they send sexual signals that should be avoided if at all they want to be taken seriously,” she adds.
“I love wearing heels at work because when I do so, my work performance tends to increase tremendously,” says Virginia Njeri, a Human Resource Officer at an Insurance Company.
“Take a look around and show me any lady who is serious with her career without a heel. Thanks to technology, gone were those days when shoes were just shoes,” she says.
“You don’t expect to come to work with ballet shoes and yet want to be taken seriously,” she adds.
Her advice to ladies is “to ditch the ballet or flat shoes for that matter and wear shoes of a 21st century woman.”
“I totally disagree that a heel signifies your success,” says Pamela Origi, a Communications Officer at Middle Sized Institution.
“As a woman, we should respect those wearing heels or flats and learn not to judge people based on their choice of shoes,” she opines.
And what is the Gentlemen perception of a woman with or without heels?
“I admire a woman who is comfortable in flats and still manages to keep her career in check.
Ladies need to understand that success is far much more than struggling in uncomfortable high heels to climb the ladder,” says Michael Wekesa a Sales Manager at a Leading IT Company.
“If Ladies want to look nice, good for them but they should also understand that a heel is not necessary,” he concludes.
“I often see ladies wearing as high as 6 inch heels struggling going to work and for what?
I feel sorry for them because it’s quite obvious that they are not at all comfortable.
As a man I want to advice women who love high heels that those shoes are stupid and bad for your health,” says Barrack Nyanchama, an Accountant at a leading Financial Institution.
“There is no such thing as dressing for success and it is good to be well informed,” he concludes.
Heels or no heels, what is your final say on the matter?
