He is known by many as the fearless yet controversial lawyer in the country and makes no apologies as he stands by his words.
Known also by his recent scathing remarks to interior cabinet secretary Joseph ole Lenku, the defiant lawyer has made friends and foes in both the political and social divide.
In a recent interview with the Business daily, the top lawyer reveals himself in a different perspective.
1. About his nickname
“People call me grandmullah because i was given that name by the chief justice Willy Mutunga during one of the jsc interviews.
It was more of expertise in Islamic law than anything.
Asked whether he is more of a fighter than a lover, he responds “I fighter, I don’t really fight people. Its only the perception that I fight people.
2. His childhood
He grew up in Mandera the most interesting time of his life. He attended Mandera primary school then proceeded to study law in the university of Nairobi then furthered his studies in Cornell University in New York.
3. His personality
“I like when people misread me because I think there is a lot of fun when people have the wrong perception about it,” he smiles when asked about his aggressive behavior as people like to call.
4. His career
“I can tell you that I have no insecurity about it whatsoever and the best lesson is to always be objective.
About the wrong decision he has ever made in his career, “that is a difficult one. I don’t know frankly none.
5. His money
On his greatest extravagants, the top lawyer says “clothes. I think I have good taste in clothes, suits ties shirts and shoes. All my jeans and most of my suits are by Brioni so am into label.
6. His family
About his strength as a father, “I think my understanding of my kids. I am not the disciplinarian I make excuses for them.
He adds that “for me, its not wealth that you bequeath your kids, give kids education, discipline and character. That’s my obligation.
7. His mentorship
I take cases for two reasons because the fee is good.
I was taught by the late mutual Kilonzo in the school of law in early 90s and he said that the more you charge a client, the more he loves you.
About his cases that he has handled “the reason is the human element. There are cases you get addicted to because of the injustice involved. I like cases where I want to show the rich powerful person involved that justice will triumph.
8. About his differing with Kenyan politicians
“Murkomen is my friend. He is a baby. He is a good guy with great ideas. You know people thought that I fought Shollei as well, but I never did, the system did.
9. How he feels about clothes and treats people
He agrees that clothes maketh a man, and I treat people depending on how they dress. However, I don’t dress for anyone; I dress for myself so that I feel good about myself.
10. His Personality
“People always think I am arrogant when I say this. But there are guys I like who have done well, but I have never wanted to be anyone but myself.
