Revealed! Unilever Tops The List of World’s Top 3 BEST Employers

Do brands like Omo, Lifebuoy Royco or Blueband sound familiar to you?

These are the products of Unilever which has managed to be not only one of the biggest companies in East Africa but as a global top employer.

According to The Standard, the company has been named the most-sought-after fast moving consumer goods (FCMG) employer in the world by LinkedIn, which also puts it among the top three employers globally.

Overall, Unilever retained the Number three position behind Google in first place and Apple in second, and ahead of businesses including, Microsoft, Facebook, General Electric, Nestle, Amazon and PepsiCo and P&G, which are in the top 10.

“This underscores the fact that we are creating the right culture and shared commitments to world class business acumen, and to meeting consumer needs around the world,” said Marc Engel, Unilever CEO for East Africa.

He said the company’s ambition is to double the size of its business while reducing the impact on the environment, and increasing positive social impact.

“We can only do this by continuing to attract the very best talent,” he said.

Through the company’s website, the Human Resource Director Ellen Bvekerwa, says that the people resource is the most important aspect for the success of a company.

“Unilever has put in place policies that ensure the workforce is fully catered for. For us, excellence in HR means creating an environment and supporting policies and programs that ensure employees have extra ordinary experiences at every touch point of their career” she says.

Do Kenyans agree on that Unilever is the best company to work for?

“I can neither agree nor disagree on the matter because I have never had the opportunity to work on the company,” says Victor Osanjo, an Administration Officer at an IT company.

“However I give them thumbs up if this is indeed a reality. The problem with Kenyan employers is giving employees hell on earth,” he opines.

He further adds that “You can never be sure if working in the firm is that good unless you are there to witness for yourself,”

“I have no faith in these so called awards. It could be that the company is making millions businesswise but that does not mean that it treats its members of staff well,” argues Cliff Kinyanjui, a Maintenance Engineer at a Construction Company.

“How many times have we seen big companies named as the best employers yet their staff still suffer?” he poses.

“There is no such thing such thing as a best employer or the best place to work for. Every place has its own shortcomings,” he says.

He further concludes by saying “Yes there are good companies that can be very supportive and helpful when working for them but that does not mean that they are 100% perfect.”
