Njoki Chege Strikes Again… “Don’t Kenyan Men Earn Enough Salary To Impress?”

Whoever said it’s impossible to please everyone was probably right. One man’s meat is another man’s poison they say. If success to you is buying a car and having to attend high end functions then you are not at par with the famed columnist Njoki Chege.

Following her trending article last week she brought out that Kenyan men do not impress her much and that there are simply no men her age to date.

Why? Here are some excerpts from her article

“I am not wasting any more time with this i-Phone wielding 29-year-old jamaaz…”

“Not me! How, pray do tell, do I get into a relationship with a young man whose only achievement is that cut-rate Toyota Mark X whose car loan he is struggling to pay?”

“Are you telling me that I will stoop so low as to be with a man who gets broke on the fifteenth of every month and his is the only mouth that he feeds? How is he supposed to take care of a family?”

“… their poorly finished one bedroom apartments in Kinoo, Roysambu and South B”

“Who wants to chat on WhatsApp with a guy juggling his limited data bundles between Instagram, Twitter and chatting four other girls on WhatsApp, Viber and Skype”

“The refined men… drive cars worth Sh3 million. You drive a Subaru Imprezza worth Sh850,000 and I won’t hear the last of it.”

Is it that Kenyan men do not earn enough money to impress or where does the problem lie?

“What Njoki says is true,” says Margaret Nduku an Interior designer in Hurlingham. She further points out that, “Men are looking to impress with invaluable things and are investing into the wrong deals. How will taking me to Masaku 7’s or driving around in a cheap car make me feel that our future is secure? Men should simply style up.”

Calvin Omondi a senior accountant in the CBD disagrees with the above sentiments

“For a long time the boy child has been neglected in preference of the girl child. For men we are working so hard to impress the already empowered women who want to only dine at places such as Villa Rosa Kempinski yet they (women) only earn a basic of Ksh.20,000 a month,” he says.

“Women with such opinions are out there to belittle us because as far as I am concerned, men are doing so well for themselves,” he concludes

Charles Gakenia, an IT specialist in Westlands, maintains that it all depends with how you take all this.

“Although Njoki’s opinions are scornful and unproven, it is a way of presenting to us (men) that there needs to be more than just owning a car or going to high end parties. Women also need to stop settling for less than they deserve,” concludes Mr. Gakenia.
