Senator Murkomen Cautions Job Seekers On Do’s & Don’ts Of Social Media

By Elizabeth Benu,

Many are times when I have heard people say they wouldn’t wish for their parents to be on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram.

Why so? Because they are embarrassed of the kind of posts their parents would find there. But this is not the case when it comes to the rest of the world seeing whatever you have posted on social media.

That said, what do your social media accounts reveal about you? Did you know it could make you lose out on a job opportunity even from the most influential references?

This is evident form a post the Elgeyo Marakwet Senator Onesimus Kipchumba Murkomen put up on his Facebook page.

“I recommended a young person from my county to be employed in a reputable organization. The Director agreed that he had the necessary qualifications and promised to absorb him. In preparation for interview the organization did a quick background check. Today the Director called to say that he is not in a position to take him in as part of his staff,” part of it read

He continues saying, “When I inquired the reasons, I was told a background search on the internet revealed that he has been hurling insults to others on social media especially Facebook and Twitter. To quote the director “Sorry we don’t think the boy has the right mind, attitude and values for our organization. Having him here would put our reputation into jeopardy. Sorry Senator but I can assure you we will help you if we can get the right candidate.”

He concludes saying that he is currently looking for the right replacement and that he has to do some background check.

He is also quick to recount of a story of a young lady who never liked her boss in the office.

“She hated the boss so much that she saved the boss’ number in her phone as “shetani” (Devil). On one unsuspecting rainy day, the lady met the Boss at the parking. The Boss offered her lift. On the way home the boss wanted to make a call but could not find her phone,” he narrates.

“She requested the young lady her phone to call her number. As she called her number to try and find her phone, ala! The name that popped out was scaring…She realized who she really was to the young employee,” he ends.

Beth Wanjira, a Recruitment Manager at Corporate Staffing Services says that, “People can see a lot about you through social media. Too many posts that are of no use have an effect on you. Focus on passing the right message because convincing someone that “it was just a random status update” will be hard”

And what advice does the senator give for the said candidate or prospective employees?

“Whereas we all have freedom of expression, let us ensure that what we say and how we say it upholds ones dignity. We must learn the skill and technique of criticizing or even disagreeing with others without being spewing vitriol.”

“Whatever you do or say try to be forward looking. Simulate your actions and look into the future,” he concludes.
