By Jane Okoth,
Sarah Mueni has been lately receiving a lot of regrets from all interviews she has previously attended.
She thinks her CV is okay but having a panel interview is her worst nightmare. This is because speaking to more than one person is hard for her.
She has no idea of how to express herself in front of people.
People like Sarah need a little help to improve their public speaking skills.
How do you get rid of that fear for you to face a group of people well?
Dianne Diresta the CEO of Diresta Communications strongly points out that one needs to focus on the audience and not be subconscious.
“It’s not about you but about the audience and what is important to them and what they want,” she says.
Take the focus out of yourself and focus on the message that you are about to give the audience,” she opines.
Brian Tracy, a professional speaker and CEO of Brian Tracy International shares his insights on 3 tips to improve on public speaking
1. Know your subject and your audience
First, pick a subject that you care about. It should be a subject you are ready and comfortable in sharing with others. This is because being with a topic that you have enough knowledge about it will give you the chance to talk and talk.
If you want to give information concerning a subject, know about the subject well.
2. Carefully research about your topic and how well to present it
Secondly, is to have enough preparation for effective communication.
“Many speakers write down their speeches and read them out loud, which audiences find dull. Others memorize their speeches and work without notes, but if they forget something, they often become completely lost and are unable to continue,” he explains.
“Effective preparation will ensure that you get yourself ready tackle anything,” he advises.
3. Rehearse your message and practice how will you deliver
Thirdly he advocates for practice and improving your presentation skills
“As the saying goes practice makes perfect, remember to put it in mind to calm your nervousness.
A good example is by recording yourself while giving out the speech. Do if from the beginning till the end. Listen to it carefully and find if there are some areas you can improve on,” he says.
Mr. Tracy advises that if you practice consistently, you will find your presentations skills have dramatically improved.
So how do you ensure that your speech to the public is presented well?
Mr. Tracy also calls for the elimination of filler words when delivering your speech.
“Do away with the Uuuuuh and Ummmmmms,” he advices adding that, “Most of the people feel the need to constantly put in the filler words because they think that they have an objective to never stop talking and are afraid of being silent. Such techniques can really kill your presentation and make you appear less credible.”
He instead offers the following solution, “You don’t have to keep on talking all the time. Use a strategic pause by looking right into the eyes of the audience and you will be surprised by how powerful this technique is.”
A journey of a thousand miles starts with a single step; start working on those skills now.
