5 Ways To Prepare For End Of Year Performance Review
By Jane Okoth,
Ann Mutave has been working as a Receptionist in a middle sized company for close to two years. After filling her performance appraisal review, she says she is in a state of panic.
“I am scared since I am not sure what my employer has in mind. What if I have been doing my job all wrong? Kindly advise me on how to effectively prepare for my review,” she writes in an email.
For people like Ann, preparing for a review can be quite especially if you have no clue about such experiences.
As the year ends, a good employee can use this chance to convince her boss that she is doing a good job by keeping these tips in mind.
1. Perform a self assessment
Chrissy Scivique, a Career Coach and Corporate Trainer, thinks that this is the perfect time to critically assess your own performance at work.
“Look at the good and the bad and ask yourself these questions; How have you contributed to the organization’s success?
In what areas do you most excel?
How can you continue to build on these strengths?
How can you better utilize your skills for the good of the team and the organization?” he advises.
“This will be of great help if you are looking to excel in some areas,” he adds.
2. Evaluate the last year performance
Amanda Pouchot, a Career Advisor advocates for one to evaluate at all the successes and failures that you have made this year without being biased.
“After all, the review process is the only time you are likely to get response regarding your performance and future with the company,” she argues.
“This is also the opportunity to let your boss be aware of any accomplishments that you think will add value to your promotion,” she opines.
3. Prepare a list of areas that need development
“As an employee, you are prone to making mistakes. Prepare a list of key areas that need improvement in your work and use this moment to be honest about your weakness and take charge of your professional growth,” advises Chrysta Bairre an Employee Specialist.
She also recommends that, “In order to ensure you are being objective enough, consider asking opinions from your trusted co workers. Know which areas need improvement and make the best of your career.”
4. Prepare for a candid conversation with your boss
Nicole Cavazos, a Recruitment Consultant at Zip Recruiter says that it is important to anticipate your employer’s opinion and feedback.
“Get ready for criticism and try not to be so defensive in your conversation,” she warns.
She maintains that, “Your goal should be to listen to the response given by your boss as well as the goals and development plans he lays out for you.”
5. Decide whether to change your salary expectations
While many companies have rules on specific occasions to ask for a pay rise, Ms Cavazos advises that, “If you feel you deserve a pay rise, your performance review is the perfect opportunity to discuss your new salary raise with your boss.”
“And don’t just ask for a raise, justify it using your accomplishments, improvements and goals,” she adds.
