Meet 23 Yr Old Who Once Sold Clothes at Gikomba. Now Employs 5 People

As young people we are fond of nagging and complaining about our state of unemployment especially if our job search process is fruitless.

But have we ever considered exhausting all opportunities within our reach?

Meet 23 year old Nancy Amunga, the owner of a half a million company dubbed Dana Communications who thinks that in order to achieve anything in life, several setbacks are just a set to a greater comeback.

Her first business venture was selling second hand clothes also known as mitumba at the popular Gikomba market.

Despite the venture flopping so badly, she tried another one where she joined a networking marketing business which involved selling herbal drugs.

If you think that failing the second time deterred her, think again because she now resorted for another business challenge- Courier Services.

Just where did the idea of courier services come from?

“I had heard a lot of companies complaining about inefficiencies with their courier delivery services such as delays of up to six hours and often time longer. I have also been a victim and I decided to be part of the solution,” she tells the people daily.

Since Amunga did not have enough finances to implement her business idea, the only option she had was to seek employment.

She then managed to work with different television programmes hosting the comedy club, becoming a production assistant of NTV’s Bebabeba and still works as a writer at Home Assured Magazine.

Her breakthrough came by in November last year when she met Manish Shah the Executive Chairman of Kingsway Tyres at a business forum.

“He asked for my business card but I didn’t have any, he told me the secret to business is “always to be prepared” and then he advised that when I am prepared I can go back and share my idea with him.”

Amunga then spent most of her time fascinated by the challenge and started believing in herself even more.

“I did not sleep, I was fascinated by Shah’s trust in me and my business idea, I trusted in myself more, and here I am,” she says.

She is now the founder and director of DANA Communications, which among other services offers courier services.

With the little saving she had, she started the company and has managed to employ 5 members of staff, set up an office along Mfangano Street and still has plans to expand her company to other parts of the country.

“DANA is here to salvage and assist companies, especially online stores in satisfying their clients by ensuring fast and efficient delivery services,” she says.

Her main inspiration is her own mother who used to sell groceries and second hand clothes. “Since an apple does not fall far from the tree, I think that’s where I got the courage and zeal to be an entrepreneur,” Amunga says.

Her challenge to young people is to stop complaining and waiting on the government to give them jobs. “You cannot complain the rest of your life, wake up and do something, be the one to create employment opportunities,” says Amunga.

This is indeed an inspiring story of a young woman who has turned her dreams into a reality in her quest to take over entrepreneurship venture.

No matter how many times Amunga failed, she did not give up and instead tried again.
