Are You About To Get Fired? HR Shares Advice On Steps To Take
By Jane Okoth,
“I am an Accounts Assistant at a middle sized manufacturing firm. He has been an employee of the company for close to two years now. However I have noticed some very weird and unusual behaviors in my place of work.
Ever since this month begun, my boss has been avoiding me and we do not communicate as often as we used to be. He recently suggested that he was about to change my job description. My greatest fear is that he is about to fire me. I am confused and do not know what to do,” writes Peter Kangongo in an email.
Speaking to Linda Chesang, a Human Resource Specialist, her advice to Peter is to have a candid conversation with the boss.
“Simply approach the boss and tell him what you have observed how you feel is affecting you,” she advises.
“If fail to do so, it will keep affecting your performance and you will be prone to making mistakes at work,” she argues.
Ms Chesang also cautions against making your own conclusions without discussing with the boss.
“If you feel that you have performed to the maximum of your abilities, why then should it cross your mind that you will be fired?” she asks.
This she argues is because the boss might be avoiding you because of issues that are not in any way related to work.
“It could be that maybe the boss has his own reasons of acting the way he is now and you are simply translating it otherwise,” she adds.
She also opines that an open discussion with your employer could be an opportunity for you to correct any mistakes that you may have made unknowingly.
“After the conversation, if the boss did mention a bit of blunders made here and there, that is the only opportunity you have to defend yourself and also rectify on it,” she explains.
However, Ms Chesang states that the boss being nonresponsive could also be an indication that you are about to be sacked.
“A good boss will let you go using the due process and informing you in advance stating the major reasons for his actions,” she says.
“The main reason why many employees are being fired without notice is because of the failure to sign contracts when employed for a job,” she warns.
Ms Chesang also cautions against getting in an employment without signing a contract.
“Majority of those employees fired without any notice have no performance contracts,” she says.
She further elaborates that “These are the kind of employers who are fond of taking advantage of employees who do not know their rights.”
She is of the opinion that signing a contract allows you to sue your employer if you feel that your firing was illegal and without notice.
“A contract is the only indication that proves this is your employer and indicates all the terms and conditions of the job,” she concludes.
Are you in the same situation as peter and how have you handled it?
