Revealed! Majority of Kenyans Want To Change Jobs in 2015 for Higher Salary

A large number of employees anticipate they will change jobs in 2015

In line with an Employment Survey 2014 dubbed “Understanding Jobseekers’ Priorities” by Corporate Staffing Services, the desire for higher compensation is the reason many would want to change their current employment.

Other factors that were mentioned in the study include job security, a better match to their skills and aspirations and a good working environment.

Even with more cases of employers discriminating against employees, a large number of current employees wants to change jobs with a majority looking for higher pay and job security as compared to aspirations and more enjoyment of work and career advancement .

“Some of the common reasons why employees quit include: A bad match between the employee’s skills and the job, unequal or substandard salary, lack of opportunity for advancement or growth, substandard equipment, tools or facilities, and toxic relationships,” says Perminus Wainaina the lead recruitment Manager at Corporate Staffing Services.

Is it wise to risk changing jobs with the current high unemployment rate?

“Of course I would. Sometimes the only interesting part about my job is taking many bus rides in and out of town. As for the pay, it is too small yet my boss gets 90% of what I work hard for,” says Jackline Moraa, a Sales Lady at a manufacturing company in industrial area.

Kelvin Nduma says he is looking to change jobs because his current company is bankrupt.

“I started out when it was still successful. I have not received my salary for the past two months yet the company still encourages us to stay. Many of my colleagues left but I hold on expecting things to get better and receive my salary. Hopefully all the job applications I have sent out will be successful,” he says.

He further adds that, “My financial responsibilities will not wait for my company to move from bankruptcy.”

Simon Matiba who works at an NGO is positive that he will not be changing his job anytime soon.

“Sometimes my work can be overwhelming and I rarely get the time to have a social life. However the pay and the benefits I enjoy here override that. As far as I am concerned money will get me the life I want and I am willing to stick to my employer no matter what,” he adds.

“My coworker and boss have been friends since I joined the company 2 years ago. In my first year we had an argument with my colleague and the boss has since been involved. Nothing I do at work pleases him and he always makes me leave the office late. Quitting seems to be my only option,” Agnes Mumbi a Front Office Assistant says.

But would changing jobs at the end of the year be advisable or should one wait until a few months into the next year?

“At this time of the year most companies are closing and consolidating their finances. They are not looking to hire any new employees. If your reason to quit can wait then take time to evaluate if it is really necessary to change jobs.

If you can work on your problem without quitting, the better,” advices Beth Wanjira a recruitment manager at Corporate Staffing Services.

Are you among those looking to change jobs in the coming year or are you comfortable where you are?
