CEO Earning K’sh750,000- 1.5M…What Do The Rest of Employees Make?

By Tabitha Makumi,

How much do you take home after slaving away all month? 7K, 15K, 50K 200K?

The big question is… does it equate to the amount of duties and responsibilities you are tasked with every day?

Better yet, do you think it preposterous that even with a degree from a ‘recognized’ institution and knowhow about your chosen industry, your pay is still mediocre and employers are willing to do nothing about it?

“I have been working for a well known FMCG company as a Sales Rep for two years. But even with the numerous number of clients I have been able to bring to the business, what I take home is terrible. I can’t even pay my HELB loans while the managers, CEO’s, directors who sit pretty in the offices take home an obscene amount of salary,” narrates Mary Okonji*

She adds that it’s demoralizing to see job advertisements with low salaries. “It’s as if they (employers) do not respect the ‘low level’ kind of employees. On the other hand, they are willing to pay the CEO’s and Directors a staggering amount of salary.”

“It’s demoralizing for employees and you can understand where their frustrations come from,” explains Kennedy Omondi a Client Service Officer at Corporate Staffing Services.

“You don’t want to work in a company where the CEO earns say K’sh1.5M while there’s an employee who earns K’sh15,000. The employees will think they are doing all the dirty work while the CEO pockets everything. No company wants that. It should be a win-win situation,” he shares.

Speaking of CEO’s and how much they earn, the firm (Corporate Staffing) recently put out a job advert for a Manufacturing CEO who will be pocketing K’sh750,000 to 1.5M.

“It comes with the duties,” explains Mr Omondi who adds that the CEO will be tasked with being ultimately responsible for all day-to-day management decisions and for implementing the Company’s long and short term plans.”

He adds that experience has a lot to do with the hefty pay, “It’s not just a low caliber opening. The vacancy is for a person with 10 years in a managerial capacity who has had previous responsibility preferably in commercial or manufacturing operations.”

In an previous article done by Business Daily showing how much Kenyan CEO’s make in a month, Kenyans couldn’t fathom there are people who make that much while others make so little they can barely make ends meet.

“The numbers are sooo big. This is just a drop in the ocean of the payment disparity in the corporate sector.~~~~middle-level employees are paid peanuts as they work hard for their bosses…” shared one Kenyan

While another added, “CEOs should be paid based on performance just like any other position in the company and if they don’t deliver, the should be let go of. This power is with the shareholders but they rarely exercise it.

What’s your view on this? Are CEO’s entitled to the millions they make?
