“If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain and bitter; for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself. Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. Keep interested in your own career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.”

Collins Njuguna has been unemployed for three years. A large percentage of his university colleagues are now working and some even driving cars. He is always filled with regrets and wishes he was like them. He has already started withdrawing from people and seeing himself as inferior.

Many are in the same situation as Collins thinking their friends or work mates with more material wealth are better off. We all do it; looking at others and wishing we were doing the same thing or looking for explanations as to why things are not good for you. This is usually not a fair comparison and that is why in the end you are left feeling hopeless and bitter.

Someone may have been born on a silver platter but that did not stop anyone born into poverty from dreaming or achieving success. So what if your plans are delayed? At the end they will materialize.

There is no need to be better than anyone else; you just need to love where you are, the achievements you have made so far and who you are as an individual. That’s what matters.

For starters appreciate where you are. Instead of looking at the lives of others, see the goodness in front of you. You already have a college degree and an opportunity to job search. Appreciate each moment, one at a time, and be happy where you are.

When you find yourself comparing your life to the lives of others, stop for a moment and change the thought. However humble you career is find ways to appreciate it.

We are all created different. It doesn’t matter what anyone else is doing, successful people never worry about what others are doing.
