From A Waitress in South B To Starting A Successful Tours & Travel Company

She is the CEO of Scenery Adventures Limited, a tours and travel company operating in Nairobi and Norway.

Monica Musungu tell Bizna news that her success was achieved through dedication and risk taking.

Being raised in a humble background, her main goal was to secure a better life and her siblings from the slum.

After she scored a C+ in her KCSE certificate, she decided to pursue a course in food and beverage at the SOS Technical Institute in Buruburu using money she had raised from her friends.

After graduating in 2003, she got a job as a Casual Waitress at a hotel in south B.

“I worked hard and was promoted from casual to permanent employment,” she says.

While working at the hotel, many of her clients wrote to the hotel’s management commending her work.

“But my prayer had not been answered even with the promotion, so I opted to resign and seek better things,” she tells The Standard.

She then found a job with World Kenya Camping and Safaris, a tours and travel company, which she secured a job with the help of its owner who was a client at her former job.

Musungu was then able to be offered a chance to work as a Marketing Manager despite having zero experience to the title.

“Although I was anxious, I knew that I would be quick to learn. I felt equal to the challenge and was determined to produce positive results,” she says.

Within a few months, Monica was able to master all the workings in the business and became the company’s image in representing it in every top tours and marketing conference in and outside the country.

It was then that she was sent to Norway to do sales and marketing for the company.

“I worked in Norway for a year. As I went about meeting clients and selling what my company had sent me to sell, I met and interacted with a man named Erlnd Voldengelt who made me believe I could start and run my own venture,” she tells the Standard.

“I did not have any capital to boot. To many of those I shared my idea, venturing into tours and travel would be the beginning of my end.”

According to Bizna news, in February 2010, she resigned from her Managerial position while still in Norway and registered her own company, Scenery Adventures together with one of her close friends.

She did not have enough money at the time and so she took a loan of Sh70,000, which helped her set up the business.

Her final breakthrough came when she managed to secure a contract to book and ride ambassadors accompanying former US, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

Since then Musungu has secured contracts with top musician Akon and MTV MAMA, the Korean embassy and the Ugandan government.

She then opened a branch in Norway with her former employer and partner Erlend Vold.

According to Monica, her success in business has been transformed by her ability to take risks, push things up, and believe that she will make it.

“Without self-believe and risk-taking, you’ll go nowhere in business. Learn from the mistakes you make and be wiser when investing,” she tells Bizna news.
