By Jane Okoth,

As we break for a new year, have you considered taking time to rethink about your career strategy or goals?

The end of the year is always a great time to start reflecting on what you have done and also on what you intend on doing differently.

“I am looking forward to getting a new job next year. Since I am more experienced , it is high time for career advancement,” says Michael Ndungu, an Accounts Assistant working with an at an accounting pharmaceutical firm.

“My greatest lesson has been the need to embrace change and growth. as I feel like I have been regressing in my career,” he adds

“I have never fulfilled any of my resolutions since 2013!” confesses Juliet Kamau who is a graduate in Human Resource at a technical university.

“I have been applying for numerous jobs never any responses.  I am hoping that this New Year will be different one,” she says

“It’s easier said than done but people need to set up realistic goals that they are capable of achieving,” says Paul Mpaka, a Sales Manager at a logistics firm.

“Most of my aspirations have been fulfilled as I have been able to further my education as well as my career,” he opines.

“When making plans, people should share them with others to find out if they really make sense. Also this is the time for people to look to other influencers and mentors within the respective industry and make contacts,” he adds.

Kent Wilson, a Career Consultant at LBMC staffing says that this is the time to get your CV updated and ready to send.

“Make sure that you are using an updated CV format. Have at least one or two trusted professionals review your resume for grammatical errors, format and content.”

Mr. Wilson also stresses the need for one to make contact with their references.

“Many people do not stay in contact with their professional references until they need them. December is a great month to reconnect with your professional references from past companies whether they are former supervisors or peers.

“Open your eyes to opportunities. This may mean returning a phone call from recruiters who called you earlier in the year, planning to attend a networking event in your discipline to meet new contacts or looking at the job boards online,” he advices.

Whatever comes your way, don’t give up on your New Year resolutions because you never know that the next time your dreams will eventually come true.

Merry Christmas and a happy new year!
