Job Application Tips
By Elizabeth Benu,
“Applying for a job is not easy” In our recent Career Point Kenya survey, 50% of the respondents confirmed that they did not know the right person to send their job application. They feel that it is part of the reason why they apply for so many jobs and get few or no responses.
The question remains, “Who is the right person to address the job application to?”
The right person to address in an online application
An online job application mainly consists of a cover letter as the body of the email and a CV as the attachment. The cover letter is what makes the first impression to the recruiter and includes the address of both the applicant and employer.
“When sending an application, address the cover letter to the person handling job applications. In most times it is usually indicated in the job advert in the following manner. ‘send your application to Kenya ABC Company, The Human Resource Manager, P. O. Box 111-111, Kenya.’ Says Melody Mwendwa, a professional CV Writer at Corporate Staffing Services.
If unsure of the company or if no details have been provided, you can make a phone call and ask for a name or title.
Alternatively, you can also indicate ‘hiring manager/human resource manager followed by the address of the company.
The right person to address hard copy applications to
In hard copy applications the details of how to post your application are usually provided in the job advertisement.
“Read the job description carefully till the end. This will allow you to get the details of how to apply instead of making a mistake in the job application,” concludes Ms. Mwendwa.
