“It has really become demotivating, especially because it has increased over the past couple of months. Everyone at the office has noticed and contemplating changing jobs,” says June Chebet.
Every one enjoys working in an environment where everyone is given equal treatment. This is what motivates you to be the best at what you do and gives you the opportunity to grow and make something out of your career. What do you do in a situation where your workplace is like ‘the animal farm’ where some people are more equal than others?
I have been working at the same company for close to 4 years now. This has been the longest I have ever stayed in one place. It would be a lie if I said I hate my job. This has been the closest I have ever come to my dream job. My job description is just so precise that if I messed up, it would actually be intentional.
The team that I work with used to consist of 4 people;3 males and me. Recently, due to the increase in the work load, a new member was added to the team and we became 5. Now we have 3 males and 2 females.

Initially, I was very excited to have her on board because I always felt like the males were pushing their agendas and sidelining me. Having a fellow female gave me more confidence to also implement some of my brilliant ideas.
A few weeks after she had reported, we noticed that the boss kept preferring her ideas to anyone else’s and we thought it was because she was just good at what she does. If anything, emulating her became my goal because I also wanted to be awesome at my job.
What struck me as odd however is that some of her ideas were really terrible and they had started having a negative impact on our performance. As a result of this, one of our male colleagues got fired.
This has been going on for a while now and even the smallest mistakes we make that land us in trouble don’t seem to affect her. She gets to the office when she feels like and these days, she hardly ever does any work in the office. This means that the rest of us have to put in overtime because the workload is now too much.
I have lost my motivation for this job. I do not mind not being on the receiving end of the ‘favor’ but I believe in equality for all. Lately, I have been thinking of looking for another job because I cannot handle the extra workload. Is this the right thing to do? Please advise me.
