“It seems a bit inappropriate and I even think it borders on disloyalty to my boss. However, the deal is very good. What do I do?” says Elizabeth Macharia
Any professional out there will tell you that job offers are not easy to come by and when they do, you jump at the opportunity to grow both your career and your salary. The lengths people will go, however, vary from person to person. Would you betray your current employer for a new job? Here is one such story.
I was one of those lucky people who got a job straight after graduation. It was the classic tale of knowing someone who decided to put their faith in my amateur skills. Most of my college classmates were just starting out and I was more than happy that I had been so lucky.
When I first started out, I had no skills and no experience and so my boss decided that it would be a paid internship. After a year, I got really good at my job and my boss offered me a full time job with a bump in my salary. For a first salary, I must admit that it was a lot. My luck seemed to be growing by the day.

For the past 3 years, I have grown and my responsibilities have increased. I have had 2 companies head hunt me, but I refused their offers out of loyalty to my employer. I was also very content with my job and I was comfortable.
When there is a work event, I usually accompany my boss and we use these opportunities to net new clients and network. This is how I met his very good friend who seemed very impressed by my skills and how good I am at my job.
2 months ago, he invited me out for coffee to discuss a business deal and I agreed. I handed him the papers for a deal he was supposed to sign out on and when we were done, he produced some papers from his briefcase which he told me to read.
I was very surprised to discover that it was an offer letter. The terms being proposed were better than the ones that I had, the salary was more than double and there were benefits! I read and re-read the document.
I looked up at him in confusion and he smiled and stretched out a pen to me. I told him that it was a big decision and that I needed some time to think. He agreed and said that I have all the time I need. He then paid the bill and left.
This issue has really been eating at me. The advantages of this new job are many and I would love the new opportunity. However, I feel like it will seem like a betrayal to my current employer. What is the right thing to do?
