David asked us to help him draft a cover letter for a lecturer position he wants to apply for. What should a teaching job cover letter contain?
Other than the normal relevant work experience, what do you have as an individual that makes you perfect for the job?
Remember, as a teacher you are a role model to your students so apart from the experience you have in teaching you will also need additional Soft . So stating some of the key soft skills you have that are relevant to the position is an added advantage which leads you closer to getting an interview.
What are some of these skills?
1. Strong interpersonal skills
You need to show how you are able to work with all types of people. Give a good example like how you were able to teach the same class with a fellow lecturer. You could also show how you have handled difficult students.
2. Strong communication skills
This is obviously important because as a lecturer, your job entails a lot of communication. You can go ahead and list a few examples of let’s say how you were able to communicate to your students in terms of assignments and projects.
3. Leadership skills.
Don’t be afraid to say if you were in charge of a team e.g. the HOD. Remember as a lecturer you get to be in charge of the class and could also show potential of handling a department if you have never had handled one before. Therefore, give an example of how you used this skill to get work done and bring people together.
It is also important to avoid some common mistakes that seem simple but can really cost you. Things like, formatting, grammatical errors and even your salutation.
