How often do you find yourself complaining about your job? Do you feel stuck at a certain level in your career? Maybe you are looking for career growth opportunities next year. Here are a few tips to help you plan for 2017 and ensure you experience career growth.
1. Look back on 2016
Before you make plans for your career in 2017, it is important that you look back on 2016. What have you achieved? What have you failed at? It is important to look back at what you have learnt and how that helped shape your career.
This will help you learn what to avoid doing in 2017 and how to go about planning you career moves.
2. Identify your new career goals.
After you have reflected on what you did right and wrong in 2016, start creating new career goals. The mistakes most people make is sit around and daydream about what they want to achieve. This alone is not enough you need to make an effort by working towards those goals.
For example if you want to get a promotion in 2017, it is not enough to do what you normally do. Figure out what is required of you if you want the promotion. Become more productive at work show your boss that you are ready and deserve the promotion. Does the position you want to be promoted to require someone with a degree and you have a diploma? Go and get the degree.
3. Write down your goals.
Yes this may seem simple but it has been scientifically proven that by writing down your goals you are more likely to achieve them. This is because when you write them down you are committing to them and will then have to work towards achieving them.
No matter how small or big the goals are write them down. Say for example you are in sales and you sold goods worth 100k in 2016 and want to sell more in 2017. It will be more beneficial to write down something like “increase sales to 150k” instead of something generic like “increase sales.”
4. Make a big commitment
If everything you have done so far has not bared any fruit. Maybe even after months of searching you still don’t have a job or you have been stuck in the same position for years. What are you willing to do to change this?
If you are applying for jobs and not getting calls maybe it’s time to invest in professional help, get your CV and Cover Letter worked on by professionals. If you are not getting promoted maybe it is time to go back to school or put in extra hours to increase your output.
5. Grow your network
Not only does this connect you to the right people but it also gives you the opportunity to learn from others. Get to know what they did to succeed and what they learnt from their failures. Networking doesn’t just have to be about getting a job.
Keep in mind that networking doesn’t just have to be with colleagues and clients. Use platforms like LinkedIn to meet and connect with other people in your field who can help you grow your career. It is never too early or late to start networking.
6. Celebrate success
No matter how small it seems success of any kind s significant. Therefore it is important to recognise any form of success. Be it in reaching your objectives or doing good work. This goes a long way in motivating you to continue on the path you are on. When you are motivated you tend to perform better.
Career growth is something we all aspire to, take up the challenge and make 2017 the year you land that dream job.
All the best in your endeavors.
