Searching for a job can be a daunting task if you have no idea how to go about it. It is important to take time and plan for your job search before starting the job hunt.
Here are a few tips to help you out in your Job search this January
1. Don’t wait for the Dream Job to just ‘Happen’
You have to start somewhere. Not everyone is lucky enough to get a first job that pays 80K at a company they always wanted to work for. Remember even CEO’s like James Mworia started out as interns.
Therefore, instead of looking down on internships and basic entry level jobs, apply for them they are the stepping stones you need to get to that dream job.
Nothing comes easy and the sooner you get that the better. The next time you see an internship opportunity in your industry even if it is unpaid, apply for it.

2. Don’t Limit Yourself to Online Applications
Online applications are easy and convenient not to mention cheaper as opposed to sending in an application via Posta.
So now most people don’t even bother making hand delivered applications or mailing it in. This is dangerous because you miss out on opportunities where you are required to mail it in.
Not only that, you can set yourself apart from the rest by creating a relationship with people in the organisation. This is because your application is more likely to be considered if it comes from a referral from one of the employees.

3. Get on Linked in
If you are not on linked in as a job seeker you nearly don’t exist. This is because most organisations search for candidates through this platform. So why haven’t you opened an account yet? If you are on linked then it is important that your profile is professional and appealing.
This is a great way to network as well and create relationships with people working in these organisations. This then increases your chances of landing a job.
4. Be optimistic
Even if you have not gotten a job yet there is no need to lose hope. Instead of staying at home idle, find something to do that will increase your skill level and you can add onto your CV.
For example, you can learn a new language; do volunteer work or even take up some part time jobs. Most requirements for NGO jobs include having worked as a volunteer before therefore if you are interested in NGO jobs then this is how to start.
Getting depressed over the fact that you have not gotten a job yet will not help you in any way. Do not give up because it’s your determination and persistence that will land you a job.
5. Make yourself an obvious fit
When you make online applications most of the time before your CV reaches a human it has gone through a screening process where it is checked for relevancy.
This means that if your CV does not clearly show that you have the qualifications for the job your application may not even get looked at.
