Love Is In The Air!But… Here’s How Not To Celebrate Valentine’s At Work
Some of you are counting hours to Valentine’s and you can’t wait to get that text message or phone call from your partner saying “I love you!”. This expectation is not for everyone though. Some of you are as single as a dollar, and Valentine’s day is one of the days you dread the most.
Don’t worry, being single on valentine’s is not a curse. In fact, you would rather be happily single than be unhappy in a relationship, right?
That said, I will share with you how not to celebrate valentine’s at work this year, to avoid being annoying to your work mates.
How Not To Celebrate Valentine’s At Work
1. If your partner is your colleague…
Workplace romance is not new. If you work with your partner, keep the celebration outside the office. For the most part, Valentine’s Day at the office is a normal day like any other. Work still has to be done and public display of affection might be quite distracting to your colleagues.
Even though your colleagues know about your relationship, keep the celebration on the down low. Spare the mushy feelings and gestures for after work hours.
2. Don’t flirt with colleagues
Valentine’s Day does not give you permission to flirt with a colleague you have been crushing on. Avoid getting physical and touchy with your work mate, in the name of celebrating love. Research shows that a gesture as small as a greeting card can be a cause of trouble. Flirting with colleagues is one of signs that indicate how not to celebrate valentine’s at work.
Behave appropriately and respectfully.

3.Don’t make a big scene
Ladies, if you get flowers delivered to your office from your man, don’t act bewildered with excitement and cause a scene.
Be considerate of other colleagues who might be going through the roughs with love, or who are not interested in the day’s celebrations.
Love is between you and your partner and not you and the whole office.
4.Don’t be shady
‘Shade’ is a new word used by millenials to refer to talking badly/trashy about something. Just because you don’t have a valentine does not mean you should say negative things about the day.
“Naomi got flowers from her boyfriend, but I’m sure he’s cheating on her,” that’s called shade. If you’ll still be nursing a recent break up, the best way to cope is to act normal and let the day end normally, like any other day would.
The bottom line is, don’t share hateful comments about the day, no matter what you have been through with love. Talking trashy is one of the indicators of how not to celebrate valentines at work.
5.On wearing red…
Wearing red at the Office is okay, if you’re that type of person. However, don’t overdo it. A small hint of red is all you need to signify that you are celebrating the day. Gentlemen, a red tie will do and for the ladies, a red lipstick, earrings or shoes is all you need for the day. All the same, the choice is yours.
On a light note, most of you identify Valentine’s with the colour red. However, majority of Kenyans don’t know why they wear red, besides red being the colour of love.
