Still Unemployed? 5 Business Ideas You Can Start With 50-100K

By Susan Gitonga

All the companies you are dying to work for were once small business ideas. And to be honest, there is nothing special about Chris Kirubi, that has made him a successful business mogul, except his hard work, patience, and undeterred determination. That’s the secret to success.

On a day to day, I often interact with people who have been unemployed for more than 5 years, people who are depending on odd inconsistent jobs to earn a living. My mantra is simple. Instead of waiting for years to be employed by someone taking the risk to start their own business, how about starting yours?

After all, what are the odds?

Earlier today, I received an email from a young ambitious man, asking me to give him ideas of a business he can start with 100K. Let’s make it more interesting by capturing business ideas you could start with 50K to 100K. Shall we?

How to make money with a 50-100K Business

1. Play Station/Movie Shop Business

A movie shop in a day can make you at least 1K and 10K on the weekends, with around 70 customers each buying one movie at KSh. 50.

In a month. That’s around 65K or more.

Over time, the more you offer quality services, the more the customers will increase, making the business grow.

Setting up

To set up a movie shop, you only need a laptop/PC, a TV Screen for movie preview display, a small, well-built stall/shop and empty CD’s for burning, all of which amount to 50K or less.
If you intend to start the movie shop and still keep your day job, you can employ a young form four leaver who is hardworking and a fast learner, to run tour business.

2. Online accessories store

River Road street in Nairobi is one of the busiest shopping streets, packed with accessories’ and beauty shops. But inasmuch as there are many physical stores, very few people have set up their businesses online.

On average, 90% of Kenyans use social media. Having an online accessories’ shop is a very great business because you can sell directly to the customers at the comfort of your home, be able to still have a day job, and make lots of non-taxable money.

The online space is the best way to set up a small business that can attract many customers.

3. Salon Business

Just recently, I calculated how much a hairdresser makes in a day if they braid a minimum of 5 people in that day.

To my uttermost surprise, I concluded that a hairdresser can make up to 10K during the weekend.

In a month, hairdressers don’t get less than 50K. A salon business, especially in today’s day and age, is one of the most profitable businesses in Kenya. Even though you don’t intend to be a salonist, you can decide to employ a talented hairdresser.

Setting Up

You only need a good hairdresser (who you can poach from a different salon), a blow dryer, a dryer, a sink, a couple of mirrors and a good room in a busy area, where rent is around 10-20K or less.

4. Boda Boda Business

A boda-boda in Kenya costs around 80K. If your business operates in a busy environment, you can make up to 40K every month.

5. Catering Business

Start your own cooking business from your house and sell food items to offices, matatu operators and ‘mjengo’ guys.

Setting Up

To set up a catering business, you only need fire, food items and lots of utensils. A good catering business that has more than 50 clients in a day can earn you 40K plus.

Parting shot

Think outside the box when coming up with a business idea, and be ready to put in the work in order for it to succeed.

All the best!
