Well, aren’t we all celebrating that we have a long weekend coming up. I know if you are not travelling up country, you are planning on catching up with friends for that road trip or just cuddling up at home with a nice movie or book. Some for you will be engaged in church activities. Whatever you will be doing, there are places you can visit with family and friends this Easter.

Forget about the job search for a while or those contracts that are due Tuesday and take a moment to celebrate life. Live the moment and appreciate the serenity that is this holiday. If you are planning on visiting places this holiday here are cheap and exciting places you can really unwind at this Easter:

1. Nairobi National Museum

The museum which was recently renovated is now bigger and a visit there will teach you almost everything you need to know about Kenyan culture, history, art and nature. In the vicinity is the snake park where you can get to see different types of snakes within the facility. It is a trip worth taking. Their entrance fee is Kshs 500 for adults and Kshs.250 for Children if you are a Kenyan citizen.

2. Uhuru Park (Nairobi City)

If you are not planning to travel outside Nairobi city this is one of the places you can visit. Uhuru Park is one of the busiest parks within the city. It is popular with Kenyans from all walks of life. If you have kids, there are a lot fun activities for them including: face painting, riding a camel or a horse and taking the popular boat ride. Entrance is free you only need to pay a small fee on the activities you partake.

3. Nairobi National park (Nairobi)

It is a sight to behold as you drive through the Park; there are plenty of wild animals in plain sights including some rare bird species and butterflies. If you are lucky you get to see 3 of the big five animals and at a very close range, so don’t forget to carry your camera along. It may not be the biggest park but it is wonderful and fully developed in nature.

4. The Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage (Nairobi)

This orphanage takes care of baby elephants who have been orphaned due to poaching. Visitors can see how precious and fragile these giants are when they are little.

Elephant calves orphaned by poaching are brought here from all over the country. They receive extremely specialized treatment and care 24 hours a day from highly dedicated staff who also become surrogate mothers to the calves. If you are interested in general information on elephants and their conservation this is a good place. Entrance to the orphanage for the visiting requires a minimum contribution of Kshs 500 per person.

5. Lake Nakuru National Park (Nakuru)

Lake Nakuru is the only place you can see the flamingos and Rothschild Giraffes. Other animals include the Lions, Rhinos both black and white, Buffalos, Giraffes, Zebra, water-bucks, Impala etc. They are all viewed in close proximity so you can take very nice photos. Entrance fee is about Kshs 500/= and you get to ride around the park in the national park bus with a tour guide.

6. Haller park (Mombasa)

Haller Park Sanctuary is home for wild animals from different species including birds. Such animals include buffaloes, giraffes, zebras, the famous giant tortoises and hippos. Other attractions sites within the Park include porcupines, peacocks, a snake park, fish farm and a crocodile farm. There is also a restaurant that specializes in game meat.

7. Karen Blixen Museum (Nairobi)

If you are into digging up history and have a particular interest in Colonial History, this is the place to visit. At Karen Blixen Museum you will learn how colonial powers and Karen herself used to live. Learn all about her kind-hearted gestures that led to the whole area being named after her. For food, there is a restaurant that has exceptional food and a beautiful scenic patio.

8. Paradise Lost (Kiambu )

This is a popular leisure and picnic site just outside of Nairobi city. Paradise Lost will thrill and amaze you with is beautiful and serene grounds. While there you can explore the caves, take a boat ride, see enchanting waterfalls, marvel at ancient trees and spot some of the rarest bird species in the country. The fee at the Paradise Lost Resort gate is affordable as the entrance fee is at Ksh. 300 per person for adults and Kshs 250 for children.

9. Dunga Beach, (Kisumu)

This beach is located at the land’s end with a spectacular and breath taking view of a large expanse of Lake Victoria, Ndeere Island and distant Homa Hills. It serves as a fishing port with a spectacular sight of boats unloading their catch and buyers scrambling for the best price. A boat ride can complete one’s tour as an excellent experience

10. IMAX 20th Century

This is for all movie lovers who just want to sit and enjoy. This is a cinema along Mama Ngina Street, Nairobi, that brings to you the 3D entertainment experience. They bring you the latest movies throughout the week. It’s a great place to hang out with friends charges for movies are from Kshs 400 depending on when the movie was released.

I know for some of us, if not all, that holiday window is the only time you have from your busy work life to catch up with family and friends.
