Here Is How I Survived My First Month At A New Job

Congratulations on landing that new job. Everything is going well you received the offer letter and come Monday, you start work. But how do you handle being new? New environments can be intimidating. So how do you overcome this and come out on top?

Here are tips that I used to survive that first month and which I think you could use.

Find Out >>> 5 Things to Do When You Hate Your New Job

1. Stop Comparisons

So if you were working in a different organisation before it is important to not start comparing the old place with the new one.

As difficult as it may be, trying to keep your old way of doing things can lead to disaster. Remember this is a new environment and as such your old way of doing things may not work.

Do not openly disagree with how things are done at your new job just because it’s not the same as your old job. You can try and make changes later on when you have been at the company longer than a month.

2. Know What Is Expected Of You

What expectations have been set on you? This is important to figure out straight away to ensure you meet the set expectations.

If you are not sure what is expected of you be sure to ask your manager. This will enable you to have a goal to work towards which will lead to productivity.

You do not want to work blindly as you will end up not delivering on what is required of you. The company’s expectations are more important than your own.

So do not work according to what you want but instead what the organisation wants.

3. Have A Go To Person

As ,much as you need to ask questions, you cannot go to your manager or boss every time you have a simple question.

So, instead have a colleague you can go to with the questions.

For example, if you want to know how to use a certain system in the office, then find an approachable colleague and ask them.

This can also save time you would have otherwise spent trying to learn on your own. Remember you should never be embarrassed to ask questions.

4. Learn The Company Culture

Remember it doesn’t matter how things were done at your old job, this is a new place with new people so you have to be ready to change.

Get to know how things are done in the new company, in terms of the work culture and dynamic between the co workers. For example does the office have an informal setting?

Do you have to send formal requests or can you just ask in person? This will enable you to fit in better and get along with your colleagues. This in turn provides a good working environment.

5. Prioritize

It is important to know what is more important and what you should first become conversant with. This means it may take you a while to really get how things are done but you need to start learning the important stuff that just cannot wait.

Check with your manager and colleagues what it is you need to know first. You may think something is important but your boss may disagree. It is important to keep this in mind when prioritizing.

Starting work at a new place with new people can be fun as well as scary. It is important to remember that you got the job because you are capable therefore, all you have to do is work hard and very soon you will not be the underdog anymore.

Strive to make an impact in the first month as this will set you apart and show you boss that you are valuable to the organisation.
