Accountable To: Construction Manager

To assist in the delivery of the company’s construction projects by ensuring site operations and construction works comply with relevant contract documents, County Council requirements and all current legislation and are delivered to specification, on time and on budget

Clerk of Works Job Responsibilities

  • To carry out site visits and inspections to ensure compliance with the contract specification and drawings, current legislation and County Council standards and policy.
  • To assist, instruct and advise contractors on site, on matters related to quality control and the interpretation of contracts documents.
  • To attend site meetings.
  • To liaise with project supervising officer as required.
  • To undertake Health and Safety monitoring on site.
  • To prepare reports on progress, site activities and all other related issues.
  • To ensure that agreed company’s Policies, appropriate Standing Orders and Financial Regulations are followed in the performance of the duties of the post.
  • To assist the company in providing training and development activities for other employees as relevant to the responsibilities and functions of the post.
  • To understand and comply with the County Council’s environmental policies.
  • To maintain confidentiality and observe data protection and associated guidelines where appropriate.
  • To carry out any other reasonable duties and responsibilities within the overall function, commensurate with the level of responsibilities of the post.

Requirements for the Clerk of Works Job

  • Have a wide understanding of the building industry, including knowledge of materials, trades, methods and legal requirements.
  • Be attentive to detail when checking work and materials.
  • Be technically competent.
  • Have good spoken and written communication skills.
  • Be honest and vigilant to make sure that the work and materials meet the required standard.
  • Be able to establish an appropriate working relationship with the contractor’s staff.
  • Be persuasive and diplomatic while remaining independent.
  • Have good judgment i.e. know when to decide when to insist on corrections, when to persuade or negotiate, and when to compromise.
