I Cannot Get A Job!! Should I Go To School To Pursue A Different Course?

“I have been looking for a job for 5 years now. I feel like the only way to get a job is to go back to university and do a different course just to get a job.”

It is everyone’s dream to land a job immediately after they graduate so that they can start living their lives and building themselves. However, this is not always the case because of the job market in the country.

This means that there are thousands of graduates who become jobless and end up taking on jobs that do not match what they studied.

What happens to those who are not fortunate enough to land jobs even in different industries? Do they go back to school to study different courses or do they accept their fate and try to live with it?

This is Cynthia’s Story

“I completed my high school education and managed to get a b+ this led to me being called to JKUAT University to pursue a degree in Computer Science.

However, when I joined university I was convinced to change the course to a business course because I was told it is more marketable and I would be able to get a job after graduation. I graduated 5 years ago and this has not been the case.

Since then I have been working as an M-Pesa attendant at a shop near our home. I have been applying for jobs regularly but so far I have not been able to secure any position that relates to what I studied.

I am now completely regretting the decision to pursue that course and feel like I wasted my time. Keep in mind that I have HELB loans that I need to repay as well and the money I earn from being an M-Pesa attendant is not enough to enable me to do this.

Could the problem be what I studied? Should I just go back to school and do another course because it seems like I will not get a job in my chosen field. If so what course do you think I should take that is marketable and will enable me to get a job.”
