5 Major Reasons Why Your CV Gets Rejected By Recruiters

“I have sent several job applications without success. How many rejected applications are a sign that I am the problem? I understand it’s a tight job market and there are loads of qualified applicants applying for each opening. What might be the problem with my CV?”

Part of the job hunting experience is accepting that not all applications you send out will lead to an interview. It’s indeed very discouraging to apply for over 15 jobs with no feedback not even a regret email.

This leads to a battered self-confidence in your capabilities and skills which can take time to heal, but it’s important to discover what went wrong, and how to avoid it next time.

What are you doing wrong?

There are several things that you must consider before sending that CV out to the job position that you’ve identified.

Qualifications are only part of the job-search puzzle. Qualified candidates get rejected from recruiting pipelines every day!

Making your CV stand out from the numerous documents received is the secret to attracting the recruiting manager’s attention.

You want the job right? So let’s make sure the employer will not be trashing your CV and application letter in the junk mail due to the few mistakes that you might be making.

1. Do away with the fancy, complicated and unprofessional email address

Email addresses are free. Recruiters as well understand that everyone has the right to choose whichever name they want to be identified with for their addresses.

However, leave this for the informal social networks. Emails like cutechubby@abcd.com or prinssesspretty@efgh.com should not be found anywhere in your CV.

Get an account that is just your name or as close to your name as possible, and use it for job applications. Show seriousness and professionalism to the employer before they even get to know you.

2. Follow instructions on the Application links

The main reason why employers give applications instructions is to ensure uniformity and make the recruitment process easier.

If they’ve indicated that you should name your CV file name using your full names, it’s because they want to distinguish between applicants and other documents. Failure to follow instructions is a direct lead into the trash bin.

3. Ensure you meet at least meet 70% of the job requirements

There is a good reason why jobs are classified into entry, Middle and senior levels in applications. Ensure that you have at least most of the job requirements before making an attempt to apply for the job. This will increase your chances of being considered for the position.

4. Remove any unprofessional phrasing and vanity titles from your CV

We understand that everyone wants to sound professional and experienced in their area of expertise. For instance, if you have a blog, adding that on your CV will be an added advantage. However you need not call yourself the ‘editor in chief’ or add unnecessary vanity titles to make your CV look promising.

5. Never Forget your cover letter

Your cover letter is a good way to show an employer what you want them to know about you, without the hiring manager having to figure it out. It’s you CV’s spokesperson. Make it punchy and relevant for the position you are applying for.
