Modern Day Life Networking Tips To Help Land That Dream Job

By Rebecca Nyawira
Looking for a job is a daunting task. Sifting through vacancies after vacancies and making numerous applications on the same can turn into a frustrating venture. But have you ever asked yourself whether this is the only way out of that endless maze?

Here are simple modern day hacks to help you land your dream job

1. Who Could Be your Networks?
Have you ever heard the common phrase used by most Kenyans that “You should Know People”. You could sit back and say that that does not in any way apply to you. That as far as you are concerned, you have never rubbed shoulders with the high and mighty and know not people in high places.
Sit back and think some more. Is it really true? Do you really not know anyone? What about that neighbor of yours who works as a branch manager in a certain bank and is the father of one of your boys in the hood?
Or that lady who you visit the same saloon and heard talking about how much work in their department is? Or that Chairman in your Jumuiya (Read Small Christian Community) that you attend every Wednesday evening? Are those not connections enough? I am certain I have jogged your mind a bit.

2. How Do You Build That Connection?
Most of us would rather sit in our cocoon with the notion that you rather not “impose” and seem to beg. Well it is about that time you burst your bubble and go all out. Get to know people.
Pay a casual visit to that friend of yours and this time, try not to ignore the dad. Say hi to him. Start off a conversation.
Most parents nowadays love to ask what his son’s or daughter’s friend is doing or did in school. Who would not want to know the kind of friends their children hang around?
Run with that conversation and let them know that you are actually looking for a job. You never know, your friend’s dad could actually know people or have a position that suits your qualifications.
What about us ladies, is the saloon not the best place to complain about your troubles. You never know, maybe your hairdresser could be having a client who is looking for someone in her company. Only this time, try not to lament, just strike a good rapport with them ask them to have an year on the ground for you as well. You never know, you could get lucky.
Relatives and family friends are also good networking potentials. Keep close contact with them. Ask them to vouch for you and maybe introduce you to people they know that can help you either via email or even make a call for you on your behalf and introduce you to them. You never know, this effort could result into your big break.

3. Maintain That Connection
There are some of us who already know the impact that networking has and could have landed that job through someone you know or through a connection from someone you know.
However, once you get that job, you decide to burn the bridge by cutting off all communication with your contact. That is one very unwise step. Make sure to keep your connections warm.
Send them an email or a text or even better still call them to thank them for helping you land that job or for at least trying to help you get that job. Invite them for coffee if you can or visit that friend or relative once in a while. Do not cut that tie cause it could come in handy again.
4. Is Your CV Patched Up?
Lastly, more often than not, you could be asked to provide a CV by whoever you had asked to help you get that job. Now it would be unfortunate if the CV you provided is not well presented or is missing very important. Make sure to have your CV ready for such an instance.

Update it every once in a while depending on the job you have been asked to apply for. You could seek the help of a professional CV writer to help you with this and you will be sure not to go wrong.
Rather than being lost amidst a sea of similar job applicants, you’re more likely to make to create an impression if you’re recommended to the company by a known network.
