5 Small Changes That Will Pave The Way For Your Promotion

By Michelle Wanjiku
It can be very frustrating to work very hard only to end up being passed over for that promotion you wanted. You probably asked yourself why the other person got the promotion and you didn’t.
Most of the time, there is a very distinctive difference between the people who actually get promotions and those who don’t. In this article, see some of the simple changes you can make that will greatly improve your chances of landing the next promotion.
1. Embrace the changes everyone else hates
One of the key ways to distinguish yourself from everyone else is to embrace changes that come up in your organization. Be it a new manager, new colleagues or whatever it is.
This will go a long way in showing your ability to adapt to changes quickly which is a good trait for top managers to have.

Also, being able to adapt to any new changes at your job will help you keep your productivity up because you are not affected negatively by things happening around you. This also helps you focus on improving your work and not why you have a new boss or who is buying the organization.
There is nothing wrong with knowing what is going on in the company you work for however, you should not let these issues affect your work output.
2. Differentiate yourself from everyone else
Another very important tip to keep in mind is instead of being like every other employee and spending your time gossiping, spends this time networking up; you never know where your next career growth opportunity might come from.
One sure way to get noticed by your boss or manager is ensuring that you are unique and noticeable.
3. Act like a mentor, not a task manager
One of the biggest qualities managers need to have is leadership and in order to be a good leader, you have to be a mentor.
Take for example, instead of screaming at a colleague for failing to complete a certain task, try helping them to finish it.

However, you need to ensure that you don’t end up letting your work suffer because you are too focused on helping your workmates.
Ultimately, your boss will notice your leadership skills and is more likely to promote someone who is willing to help others achieve the goal of the organization.
4. Spend more time on learning new skills
There is nothing wrong with focusing on delivering results but results only will not get you a promotion. The common myth is that if you perform really well at your job you will automatically get promoted. This doesn’t hurt but it is the skills you have that will get you promoted.
Think of it this way, you have already shown that you have the qualifications to perform the job you have so you need to show your boss that you have the skills required to perform at the next level as well.
So take some time and take classes and training sessions to better your skills such as public speaking, customer service and leadership among others.
5. Find big problems to solve
Something else you should focus on is trying to solve a problem that the organization has. What you need to ensure is you actually come up with an idea that works and this way you get to impress your boss.
Ensure you focus on a problem big enough that you will get noticed for helping solve it. This will help show your boss or manager that you take initiative and you are also a big asset to the prosperity of the company.
In Conclusion,
Everyone wants to achieve upward growth in their careers that said getting a promotion will not happen overnight it is something that you really need to work towards. You need to be prepared to put in the work if you want to grow your career.
