5 VERY Important Lessons I Learnt When I Lost My Job

By Michelle Wanjiku
It’s one of those things you can never forget, being told that you will no longer have a job can be scary and disappointing.
It was a Friday afternoon when I received an email asking me to report to my boss’s office before I leave. That was when I knew I being fired. It wasn’t the first time this was happening; I had seen it happen countless times with other colleagues.
The company was downsizing I just didn’t think I would be among those laid off. I then spent the next week in denial, depression and then finally anger. How could they just fire me after all I had done?
But after a few days of self-pity I decided to get back on the horse. I mean bills will not pay themselves and I did not want to move back home.
1. Figure out what you can learn
One of the most important things you need to do is to ensure that you figure out why you were fired in the first place as opposed to someone else.

If it has anything to do with you and your work, then this is a good chance for you to work on it and ensure that you are not fired at your next job again for the same reasons.
This will ensure that you learn from your mistakes and avoid making similar mistakes that land you in the same situation again. This is a good opportunity for you to learn from your mistakes and change.
2. Don’t beating yourself up
By assessing the situation honestly, you get to find out why you got fired sometimes it’s something you do and sometimes it has nothing to do with you.
Its therefore very important that you don’t spend the rest of your life blaming yourself for what happened.
In my case since it was a downsizing and 20 other people were fired as well, it means it was nothing personal.  You are allowed to have a few days to wallow but after that you need to come up with a plan on how you are going to get another job.
3. Be objectively positive.
You were fired and you probably can’t think of how this is a positive. However, you need to sit down and make a list of all the things you know you did right at your previous job.
This will go a long way in ensuring that you boost your self-confidence and will help you get back to job hunting faster.
4. Forget about the anger
During the first few days of being fired you will definitely be angry at yourself and your boss. This is expected however holding on to too much anger can ruin your chances of getting another job.
After a while you should let go of the anger and focus on moving forward.

5. Accept that it may have been a bad fit.
Sometimes losing your job can be the best thing to happen to your career. This is the time for you to evaluate the job and see if it really was working for you.
Look at what you didn’t like and what you want to be different for the next job. This is a chance for you to really think about your career and where you want it to go.
You might end up getting a better job with better pay and benefits.
In Conclusion,
Losing your job might feel like the end of the world but really it is a chance for you to start over. Focus on making yourself better and revamp your career. Don’t let being fired ruin your chances at having a great career.
