5 Steps Towards Building A Happier & Better Future For Yourself

5 Steps Towards Building A Happier & Better Future For Yourself

By Lilian Wamaitha
Isn’t life too short to live your life for someone else?
One of the regrets that a majority of people have is not living their lives to their full potential. While I insist that what happened in the past remains there, it is what you do today that determines your life ten years from now.
What legacy are you creating? Are you just waltzing through life not living to your full potential?
How about instead of wasting your time thinking about how others around you got lucky, you take matters into your own hands and live your life exactly the way you want to?
We all have day dreams and fantasies of what our perfect lives would look like.
As you grow up, you realize that life does not work the way you want it. It does not fall perfectly into place just because you wished it did and a majority of the time you will spend disappointed that you have not achieved anything.
But that doesn’t mean that your life has to suck. Forming a realistic vision that’s based on a list of your life priorities is definitely a good start because as you will find out later on, the best way to attain happiness is by focusing on things that actually matter and seeing the bigger picture to understand all its puzzle pieces.
1. Enrich your mind
“A reader lives a thousand lives before he dies. The man who never reads lives only one.” – George RR Martin.
Just because your choice of education got you to the place you are now, doesn’t mean that that’s the only skillset that you need to develop.
The secret to finding happiness in life is to keep feeding your mind. And you do that by constantly reading.
We all have our choice of literature and whatever yours is; there is at least a book that you can read.
Books hide incredible knowledge that you can never find anywhere else. The sad truth is that most of us would rather be logged on social media and TV 24 hours a day that pick a book and read.
2. Learn to take care of your body
Your body is a fortress that will determine whether you are happy or not. The lifestyle you lead most of the time will depend on your bank account but the greatest factor is your health.
Ask anyone who has health issues and they will tell you that their only wish is to get back to health.
You should never treat your age as an obstacle to live a healthy life. On the contrary, you should use the experience you have thanks to being around for longer to your advantage.
I see it all the time, people scared  to grow older, but those numbers are just nothing but milestones. Age as they say is just a state of mind and how you perceive it will directly affect your happiness.
Dwelling on what may have been and wanting to turn back the hand of time and thinking that time is passing you by is just actually filling your mind with despair. Quit living in the past and embrace where you are now.
If it helps, look back at all the milestones you have covered. You are here now because of those challenges you have overcome in the past.
3. Enjoy what you do
It may not be a job at Google or Facebook; you may not be travelling all over the world; on runways in different countries and enjoying all the glamor of the red carpet, but actually learning to be satisfied with what you have is the first step to creating a life of happiness for yourself.
What I mean is that not all of us are fortunate enough to have the perfect careers but before you take that step of pursing something that you love doing, you should find ways of enjoying the current one you have.
I am a firm believer that every job and career can be satisfying as long as you find a meaningful perspective of what that job actually represents.

4. Change or improve your environment
This can be a bit hard to understand because it’s really one of those daily things that we don’t pay much attention to but the way your home looks has a say in your overall life satisfaction.
It’s quite simple really if you think about it. When you spend time surrounded by things that you don’t like only works to create negativity that you don’t need to lead a happy life.
Contrary to what you may be thinking now, it’s not necessary to empty your bank account in order to have a home that you like coming back to.
My suggestion is starting with your bedroom and finding cheap ideas online to turn it into a stress free zone.
5. Lastly, secure your future
Thinking ahead about what your life will look like is kind of scary especially because the universe has a weird sense of humor of turning those dreams into something else.
However, in as much as you may not achieve everything on your bucket list, there are things that are in your control.
True happiness does not emanate from money or status though society revolves around it most of the time.
It’s never too late to start developing a plan for your future. Most likely is that you will not achieve everything but you will achieve what is in your control.
It’s now in your hands
Truth is, the hardest thing about all these steps is changing your mindset. However, when you think about it, you deserve to lead a life of happiness and satisfaction and the least you can do is change the way you see things.
