8 Goals Every 20 Something Must Set To Accomplish Before 30

By Lilian Wamaitha
If you are in your early or mid-20s, you probably have a lot of things that you wish you could accomplish by the time you are turning 30 or even 40.
Probably get married, have a few kids, have a career that you can be proud of, a perfect house in a perfect estate or travel the world.
Whatever your goals are, we all have desires that we would wish could come true for us.
The big question is what you are doing to make those dreams come true?
Here are 8 goals that I believe each one of us should set out to accomplish before we turn 30.
1. Boost your financial stability
Before you turn 30, becoming financially stable is a mandatory. Sure, your twenties are a time to enjoy life and expand your social circle.
But when you turn 30 life really begins. That is the time you will be thinking about a family, owning property and so on.
And so you need to be in a position to afford all those things. This means that your 20s is the time to start setting aside money for the future by saving or investing.
2. Get a job that matches your career interests
This is simply finding out what you are good at and becoming an expert in that field of study. By the time you reach 30, you are supposed to figure out for yourself what you can comfortably do.
This is because being an expert in your field will make you stand out in this tough job market. Also, acquire the skills that will help take you to the next level.
For instance, if you love writing, it’s about time you embraced your talent and do something about it. Become an author or teach others how to write.
Whatever you do, just ensure that it is something you are good at and can become an authority figure in.
3. Look out for more senior roles
Employers can be very choosy when it comes to the hiring process. Some of the positions which require applicants who are older will also demand more experience. This is why it is important to look for senior roles instead of getting comfortable in your old position.
This is because some jobs will require candidates with a lot of experience and especially give priority to candidates who have served in senior roles.
When looking for a more senior position, it is also important to tailor make your CV with the specific role in mind.
4. Read at least 100 books
Assuming that right now you are 20, this means reading 10 books every year. Whatever your poison is, there is at least a book that you can read about. I am an avid reader and reading is my first passion and writing second.
Books hide incredible knowledge that you can never find anywhere else. The sad truth is that most of us would rather be logged on social media and TV 24 hours a day that pick a book and read.
I have loved reading ever since I was in class five and it is only through that that I have come to realize how much we miss on when we refuse to read. The impact that these books have made and continue making in my life is huge.
5. Write a letter to your future self
Ensure that you include your dreams expectations as well as your plans for the future.
Decide also on how much time needs to pass until you open that letter because once you do it, it will be a chance to see whether or not you became what you wanted to become.
6. Learn to go offline for at least a month
I am very good at this and those who know me will tell you that I have been off social media for more than a month now and plan on doing that for the next five or so months.
Don’t even start with six months, just do a month and your will be surprised at how impactful those 30 days will be. This 30 day break is a test of your ability to entertain yourself in something else other than technology.
I can tell you that it will be worthwhile. You will start noticing other things like relationships you can cultivate on a one of one basis that don’t involve texts, likes and follows.
It will also be a great opportunity to spend time with those who matter – friends and family and also focus on your passions as well as what you are good at.
7. Learn to be your own person and not look for approval from others
Even since we were young, we have been conditioned to care too much about the opinion of others. That is why social media continues to thrive with all these people creating personas that are very different from the real them.
Before you turn 30, quit living a lie and start embracing who you really are. Does it matter whether your friends don’t approve of what you are doing right now? No it doesn’t – it’s your life and only you can decide who you want to be.

8. Learn how to say no
Saying no is one of the hardest things that you will ever have to do, but there comes a time when you have to put your foot down and say enough is enough.
Don’t go into your 30s saying yes to everything. Learn to stand your ground and defend your values.
Your boss will not kill you just because for once you want to get home earlier than seven. Your boss will also not kill you because you cannot do that extra role they want you to. And in your social circles, you will not die because you don’t want to party till dawn every other weekend.
In conclusion,
Whether you are approaching 30 or still have a long way to go, learning where you want to be when that time comes is just as important as this moment. Don’t go into your thirties without a clue of who you want to be.
