Modern CV Template: 3 Formatting Tricks To Use

Modern CV Template: 3 Formatting Tricks To Use

By Joan Igamba

One size does not fit all when it comes to formatting a modern CV template.

Every company you send your CV into is a different organization. So, why do you only have one standard template that you send to each and every job that you apply for?

A CV that you will use to apply for an accounts position in Company A is not the same CV that you will use to apply for the same position in company B.

So for this reason, you must have noticed that there are around 500+ links on other websites to show you the right curriculum vitae format and the right language to use in that CV. We won’t repeat it, when others have done it to perfection.

What I will do is give some general advice, that should help no matter what your field, your skillset, level of career or even if you have employment gaps. The trick is to understand that every single job out there is different hence your CV format should reflect this.

You need what recruitment agencies call a “Skeleton” resume that is flexible, where things can be cut and pasted, pulled around, taken out or put in.

Let us go through some few tips to develop this modern CV template.

1. Never give out false information

Remember when they say impress the employer, or format your CV to resemble the job advert, they didn’t mean that you lie to show that you fit the bill. No.

The sole purpose of a curriculum vitae is to get you that interview, period.

If the employer senses that some things are not adding up, then that would put you at a disadvantage. After all, the truth will reveal itself during the interview.

2. Remember, less is always more

For a modern CV template that you will use as a standard guideline, remember to keep it short and simple with some human touch.

It’s not a biography. And as we said, it’s only supposed to get you the interview. Keep the employer at the edge of their seat by formatting your CV to be very specific.

Sell yourself by saying exactly what the employer wants to hear. How do you do this? By strictly following the qualifications listed on the job description and matching them with your skills and experience.

Think of your CV as wrapping paper that will make the person receiving it eager to tear open the package and see what’s inside.

You can only achieve that by following this modern CV format that will get you those interviews and then that job.

3. Most importantly, follow the leader

There are many CV writing experts in Kenya who can help you format a modern CV template that you will use as a template for different Jobs.

For instance, Corporate Staffing Services, arguably the most successful recruitment agency in Kenya, has generously made its career advice services available to the world.

And with this,

You will make your job search much much easier without having to format a new CV from scratch every time you want to apply for a job.
