When it comes to the job hunt, there are very many things you could be doing that ruin your chances of getting a job. However, there are some very common mistakes you could be making that you are not aware of which could be preventing you from getting that dream job.

1. The HR stalker
Every good job seeker knows that making a follow up can be a good way to better your chances of getting a job. However, there is a limit to just how often you can call the interviewer or recruiter.
One very common mistake most people looking for a job make is calling the HR manager all the time. You need to remember that these are busy people and they are not just handling that one position. Therefore, you need to be considerate and don’t badger them with calls and emails all the time.
Calling and emailing all the time can put off the HR manager and as such completely ruin your chances of getting a job. You need to ensure you get in touch with the manager sparingly and in a courteous way.
2. The mass CV uploader or sender
Are you one of those people who apply for hundreds of positions without even considering your suitability for any of them? If yes, then you need to stop immediately.
Applying for over 100 jobs will not guarantee or improve your chances of getting a job, especially if you are applying for any job you come across.
In order to have a successful job search, you need to be very intentional about the jobs you apply for, you also need to customize your CV and cover letter for every job.
3. The interview cliché generator
So you are invited to various interviews but never get called back, the problem could be what you say during the interview.
If you are one of those people who use phrases such as “willing to learn”, “I’m a multi-tasker” and other common clichés then this is something you need to change.
Look at it this way, if you want to get the job, you need to be unique and stand out from all the other job seekers and you can’t do this if you use such generic phrases to describe yourself.
If you want to pass an interview, you need to start being genuine and even have proof that shows you are all these things without necessarily having to say it. This will better your chances of getting the job.
4. The hook-me-up candidate
There is nothing wrong with getting help from your networks to know of available job openings and getting recommendations after all this is why people have networks. However, you need to remember that networking is a give and take.
Don’t be one of those people who expect help from people but are not willing to help others. People are more likely to help someone they know will help them when the time comes. You need to be willing to assist your networks as well if you want to get help from them.
