The Secret Formula to Tackling "What's Your Weakness?" In Any Interview You Attend

Interviews, who likes them anyway?
But whether you like it or not, interviews have been there and they are always going to be your only ticket to getting that dream job you’ve always wanted.
Now, in any job interview , the main secret is being able to put your best foot forward which is why answering “What’s your biggest weakness?” has turned out to be pretty difficult for many candidates.
For this reason, I resulted to getting an expert’s opinion from Esther Kamau, a lead Interview Coach at Corporate Staffing Services to understand the secret to answering this question.
Esther says that having coached candidates from various professions, she has realized that there’s no other interview question that makes candidates feel trapped like this one.
She adds that if you’re too honest in that room, you might scare the hiring manager & blow your chances of getting the position and if you’re not honest enough, you’ll definitely lose credibility!
So how do you do it?
Well, the first thing she says,  is to realize the reason why the question is being asked and keep in mind that it’s not meant to trip you up.
Instead, this question is to see if you’re self-aware enough to recognize a flaw, and then self-motivated enough to fix it.
Here are four secret ways to approach it.
1. Never remain silent or appear blank when the question is posed!
For most interview candidates, this is the moment dreaded moment.
You don’t know whether to speak bad about yourself, how to do it or whether to lie or not.
Probably, you feel shy blowing your own trumpet or you feel awkward speaking of your negatives which according to you could tamper with your interview success.
But Listen…
Being unable or unwilling to come up with anything at all when the interviewer asks you about your weaknesses or strengths only means one thing:
You’re not self-aware!

And this is the last thing the employer expects from anyone they want to bring on board as part of the company.
2. Spin that negative weakness into a positive answer
I am sure that for all the jobs you’ve interviewed for, looking bad before the employer has been the least of your desires.
So, do not push this button.
When choosing a strength, make sure what you choose is closely related to that particular role.
Do not say you are a good team player while the role clearly requires a keen eye to tiny details. For instance, for an admin role you can say;
I am always on time, and my motivation never wavers, doesn’t matter if we speak about work, or any other activity I do outside of work. I always give my 100% and cannot imagine living my life in any other way. On the other hand, I know I should work on my management skills, and I plan to do so in the future.”
3. Do not pretend to be the perfectionist who has no weakness
Be careful with this one.
The employer is evaluating yourself values like honesty. So, you don’t want to sell yourself short at this point.
You might want to avoid giving an answer during the interview that will sound arrogant as most job candidates do or clearly dodges the question, such as “I’m a perfectionist, and just can’t rest until all problems are completely resolved” or “I’m just too much of a hard worker.
This is more appropriate for a weakness;
I sometimes overdo getting my work done ahead of time. However, I am excellent at meeting deadlines, and with my attention to detail, I know my work is correct.”
You can hence use this chance as an opportunity to show how you’re actively working to improve your weakness.
4. Remember, Honesty is the best policy at interviews
You don’t want to tell a lie and later find it impossible to cover for it.
How embarrassing right!
If you are afraid of giving an honest answer that could clearly damage your chances of getting the job, then quickly jump into the alternative.
This is why you need to have a thorough practice prior the job interview.
For instance, if the customer service position will require you to be on the phone frequently, you wouldn’t want to respond by saying you have a poor phone handling skills or accidentally hang up on people when you intend to transfer the call.
As much as you want to be honest, remember to be wise too.
With these tips in mind,
